Hamatocanthoscypha on Osmunda?
François Bartholomeeusen, 08-06-2026 17:00
Good day everyone,

On June 5 2026, I collected dead stems and leaves of Osmunda. On the leaves, leaf veines and a few petioles I found very small white, disc- to cup-shaped ascomata (diameter < 270 µm).
The dark basal ring is striking, but it is not a Calycellina because the ectal excipullum is completely covered with short hairs with pointed, glassy, curved or curled tips.
Textura: angularis
Hairs: no reaction in KOH;
Asci: 17-29 x 4-6 µm; with croziers, blue in Lugol's solution;
Paraphyses; cylindrical;
Spore: 4-6 x 1.3-1.9 µm; lacrymoid;

Could this be Hamatocanthoscypha laricionis var. laricionis? The spores and asci are, however, smaller and the substrate is different! Any help would be welcome.

Greetings,
François Bartholomeeusen

Re : Hamatocanthoscypha on Osmunda?
The glassy hairs remind me more of an Unguiculella, although the paraphyses are not hooked.

Roland Kirschenr wrote an article on a very similar fungus from Taiwan on a fern (Angiopteris). It was very problematic in which genus to place it. The phylogenetic analysis placed it distantly in the Calloriaceae with Laetinaevia and Calloria. Perhaps your fungus is closely related to this from Taiwan.

Hamat. laricionis has no glassy solidification of the hairs.

Dear Zotto,

Thank you very much for your correction and information. Searching online, I have found many articles by Roland Kirschner. Is the publication you are referring to Nova Hedwigia 119(3–4): 419–448, or is it another one?

Greetings,
François

On the NH homepage I see the title "Plectosphaerellaceous fungi (Ascomycota) on leaf litter of the subtropical giant fern Angiopteris lygodiifolia (Marattiaceae) in Taiwan". The paper on this helotialean fungus is not published.
