Mollisia sps growing on Corticioid ?
Hardware Tony, 16-06-2024 16:47
Hardware TonyThese apothecia directly growing on a resupinate, itself growing on a Quercus branch on the ground. Majority of discomycete bodies growing on the hyphae of the resupinate, this has been identified as Hyphoderma cryptocallimon, an unusual corticioid itself in the UK. Only recognised parasitic type discomycete that I could find was Pyrenopeziza kolaensis and this doesn't fit this description. Ref Ellis/Ellis. I felt this was close to M. palustris sps, but substrates geneally dicots/monocots? See full description/micropics attached.

Any guidance please. With thanks    Tony Hardware

You say no obvious VBs but since you show only dead elements (perhaps a few living spores), how can you tell?

I am not fully sure between Mollisia and Pyrenopeziza.

Thanks Otto for your very quick answer. Didn't recognise as dead elements. is there anything I could test that might suggest Mollisia over Pyrenopeziza?
Thanks   Tony

Hi Toni!

To identify Mollisia, it is best to have vital elements. Mollisia always has refractive vacuoles in the paraphyses and marginal cells.
Vital spores are also better suited for measuring the spores and assessing the OCI.

I also don't think that the asco parasitizes the corticoid fungus. This is probably more about competition.

Hi Ingo,
Thanks. I'll try once more for live material in the paraphyses and for spores with other samples. Tony

Of course you must use water, nothing else, and avoid pressure on the preparation. Sections are preferred.

Re : Mollisia sps growing on Corticioid ?
Yes, did all these but I think I have too much dead or dying material. Most paraphyses are filled as before, spores are less alive, and so there appears not more to add than already stated. Thanks for your help but appears not any further detail I can add.
