white Hypocrea on cow dung
Stip Helleman, 03-11-2010 18:08
Stip HellemanDear all,
I got a mail today about a Hypocrea collection from our last sunday foray on cow dung. The part-spores are still hyaline 4 - 4,5 x 2,5 - 3 and the diameter of the stromata is up to 1.4 cm.
Has anybody a idea?
t.i.a.
cheers

Hi Stip,

Very interesting. I have so far on my list of 159 genus of Ascomycetes of dung. Hypocrea was not there. Walter M. Jaklitsch says: Hypocrea is not without anamorphic determined. Maybe they send you a receipt, as well as appliances which also works with hyaline spores. His publication of Hypocrea with green spores so on here:

thanks Peter,
but the work of Walter Jaklitsch brings no solution perhaps the collection should be send to the CBS.

Re:white Hypocrea on cow dung
I do not know any Hypocrea from any kind of dung but you really need to know the anamorph and also get DNA sequences to really characterize it. We are finding that everything that looks like Hypocrea (that is, has bicellular ascospores that disarticulate at the septum) are not always Hypocrea. For example, Jaklitsch et al (Mycologia last year) separated Hypocrea pallida and similar species that occur on APhyllophorales from Hypocrea into Protocrea. You could contact Jaklitsch about this one or I would be happy to try to help you if you have a fresh collection.

Hi Gary,

That was 2008. Mycologia, 100(6) pp. 962-984, Reconsideration of Protocrea (Hypocreales, Hypocreaceae) So fast time flies. :-)

Hello all,
Would one have the PDF of this paper about Protocrea? mycoluc@gmail.com
Thanks in advance.
(I found the one on Piptoporus this year)

Interesting find BTW.

Re:white Hypocrea on cow dung
I don't want to say that Peter's species is a Protocrea, although it has a similar appearance, I just wanted to say that some things that we may think of as Hypocrea is actually something else. I would very much like to know the anamorph of Peter's fungus. PRotocrea is characterized by the production of a distinctive true Gliocladium anamorph; this can usually be seen on specimens. Sphaerostilbella berlekelyana, which also produces a Gliocladium anamorph, occurs on Trametes-like hosts in Europe; at least it was rather common in southern Switzerland (TI). It has a red color. I am uploading the Jaklitsch et al Protocrea article. The illustrations are really nice!

Thanks Luc, Peter & Gary for your comment and the article.
It has really good photos and i see is indeed impossible to draw any conclusions without the anamorph.
Gary the person who holds the collection is tomorrow on a short leave for a week, i asked her to send it to the CBS p a G Verkley in your favour becouse i am not able to make a culture from a Hypocreale, if you can contact Gerard i am sure it will work out.
Cheers Stip
