A few small scattered black perithecia with dark brown stiff setae, but no Capronia. Found near Nürnberg on still attached dead Quercus branch 15 mm thick, corticated, on bast (where Vuilleminia grew), soc. Cryptodiscus foveolaris, Orbilia obtusispora, Propolis versicolor, Parmelia sulcata. Perithecia 250-300 µm diam. Sp. *55-63(-73) x 6.8-8 µm, (10-)12-14-celled. All parts IKI-.Any idea?

If the ascomata are soft-textured, this may be a species of Acanthostigma.

Hi Zotto,
I agree with Amy it should be an Acanthostigma, and ascospores match well those of A. minutum (Fuckel) Sacc. I repeatedly collected this fungus growing gregarious on rotten water-soaked wood, which is different from your collection, but details on its ecology are still to gather.

many thanks for your identification. Yes, the peridium is quite soft. The branch was in ca. 1-2 m above ground at a S-exposed edge of a forest, and all ascos on it are strongly xerotolerant. I rehydrated the branch 4 days after I collected it during dry weather, so also the Acanthostigma is well xerotolerant.
Is there any description in Reblova & Barr 2000? Jacques, do you have a documentation of the species?

thanks, the description actually fits very well in most points. Septal number in the description is exactly as mine, also spore size and shape is wonderful. No details on the water relations of the substrate are given, regrettably. Interesting the Helicomyces anamorph, I will look again, hoping to find some perithecia left.

I discovered only one further perithecium. here you see how sparsely it grows on the substrate.
