Saccobolus minimus?
Christiane Baethcke, 04-02-2012 18:14
Christiane BaethckeHallo everybody,

I found on  droppings of goat in a nature reserve a Saccobolus. Following Doveri I would like to call it Saccobolus minimus. The seize of the spores and the sporeclusters resembles his discription in Fungi fimicoli. Since I have very little experience with that genus, I would love to hear your opinion.  The photo of the whole fungus is taken as well through the microscop, because of the very small size.

Kind regards
Christiane

Re : Saccobolus minimus?
Hello Christiane.

With these colors and yellow pigment in the paraphyses, your fungus is in the section Saccobolus, but I think the size, shape, and arrangement of the spores is not going to S.minimus. You can also see on some spores of crevices on the perispore. You'd have spores with precision measurements and you also observe the perispore. Also measure the size of asci sometimes important.? And compared with S.citrinus S.glaber?.

Regards.

Michel.

Re : Saccobolus minimus?
Hallo Michel,
Thank you for answering. I measured now as well loose spores and thy were between 14-16x 6-7um. The asci I measured were 80-100x20um. The sporeclusters were all below 40um. That makes that I can exclude S.citrinus and S.glaber, which have much bigger spores, sporeclusters and asci.
I can´t see any other Saccobolus with this measures.
Best regards
Christiane

Re : Saccobolus minimus?
Good evening.

The dimensions seem to agree fairly well S.minimus, but it should be checked with S.truncatus, whose dimensions are close. The kind Saccobolus is difficult, and I think the species is quite variable.?

Michel.

Re : Saccobolus minimus?
Good evening,

Comparing with S.trunctatus the colour of S.minimus is differs. S.minimus is honeybrown, while S.trunctatus should be light yellow. The spores of S.minimus are not so braod and the sporecluster is longer. On top the the asci are longer compared with S.truncatus. I think you can agree, at least according to Doveri.

Best regards
Christiane
