Macrodiplodiopsis desmazieresii on Platanus occidentalis
Ethan Crenson, 04-03-2019 06:04
In Brooklyn, New York.  I believe I have found Macrodiplodiopsis desmazieresii on a fallen branch of Platanus occidentalis in my neighborhood.  There are tiny pustules beneath the bark which contain large, thick-walled, brown conidia that are 3-septate and enveloped in a mucoid (?) sheathe.  Conidia are 44.5-52 x 17.3-19.8µm.  The branch was lying at the base of a large Platanus occidentalis--the only one in the area. The neighborhood is otherwise heavily populated by Platanus x acerifolia, so I suppose it is possible that the branch was from one of those trees.  Has M. desmazieresii been recorded on Platanus occidentalis?  Is my identification correct?

Thank you!

Hi Ethan,

your identification is correct. Platanus occidentalis is also the host of M. desmazieri.
You can find some records here:

Thank you very much.  I can't believe I did not know about the existence of that database!
