Polysporous Podospora, P. granulostriata?
M. M. Gotink, 26-05-2010 00:18
On rabbit dung this time, which I also keep in a moist container since a few weeks. A rather big Podospora with real hairs on the neck and polysporous asci.

Fruiting body 1000-1100 x 580 µm. Hairs on neck present, septate, up to 250 µm long, 3-5 µm wide.
Asci with many spores, it looks like way more than 128, likely up to 512.
Spores 2-celled, main brown cell 18-23 x 12-13 µm, hyaline pedicell 12-14 x 3-5 µm, appendages variable, often long and slender. Both pedicell and appendages apparently easily released in mature spores.

Having more than 128 spores per ascus and given the spore size only P. granulostriata is possible according to Ellis & Ellis. But I don't have any good description of that species, and I read somewhere P. setosa and P. tarvisina are also closely related? I would like to have some more information on these species.

Can this be P. granulostriata, or are there other possibilities?

Martin

Hi Martin,
maybe P. tarvisina is a later synonymous of P. setosa.
In Doveri "Worldwide Key to Podospora and Schizothecium" I see that P.setosa has asci 128-spored and P. granulostriata asci 512-spored. Ciao

Hi Martin,

That to me is Podospora setosa. The spores are safe only 128 per ascus. What did you do to the literature?

Re:Polysporous Podospora, P. granulostriata?
Hi Carlo, Peter,

I think I kinda overestimated the number of spores in the asci, P. setosa it is, I've even found it before...
Carlo, I can't find 'Doveri "Worldwide Key to Podospora and Schizothecium"', is the title correct?
Peter, what exactly do you mean with 'What did you do to the literature?' (you can reply in German if you prefer, I understand it pretty well).

Thank you both!

Hallo Martin,

ich sende dir den Schlüssel mal per Mail. Kann dein Postfach 2,5 MB vertragen?

Ich wollte wissen was du für Literatur hast? Google übersetzt leider oft Mist.

Gruß Peter

Hi Peter,

Ich hab den Schlüssel empfangen, vielen dank!

I just started looking at this kind of fungi, so I don't have too much literature yet on this subject.
- Microfungi on miscellaneous substrates (Ellis & Ellis)
- Keys to fungi on dung (M. J. Richardson & R. Watling)
And I have a number of different articles on this subject, but for Podospora/Schizothecium i had nothing comprehensive.

Hi Martin, excuse me..The exacte title is:
Doveri F., - 2008 : Aggiornamento sul genere Chaetomium con descrizione di alcune specie coprofile, nuove per l'Italia / A bibliography of Podospora and Schizothecium, a key to the species and a description of Podospora dasypogon newly recorded from Italy. Special issue of Pagine di Micologia, Associazione Micologica Bresadola-CSM. pp.160.
I hear privately, Carlo

Hello Martin.

Also agree with Peter and Carlo for P.setosa. Granulostriata is rarer, has different spores and hair specific.

Thanks Michel, i do not doubt about P. setosa anymore.
