Mushroom Observer's Scutellinia Mess
Danny Newman, 31-07-2013 04:15
Danny NewmanMushroom Observer's Scutellinia pages have been very disproportionately weighted in favor of S. scutellata above and beyond all other taxa for several years, reflecting the general North American tendency to call every Scutellinia by that name (I blame oversimplified field guides).  The vast majority of the observations in question have no microscopic information, and thus cannot be identified to species.  Below are links to the Scutellinia observations which do have microscopy included.  It is my hope that Benat or someone else from AscoFrance would be willing to look at these posts and determine the correct species, if it is even possible to do so from the information given.

Re : Mushroom Observer's Scutellinia Mess
Adio Danny,

I remember you have asked me this by email.
I have seen this problem on mushroomobserver but I didn't want to impose my opinion. So, I decided to shut up.
This problem is recurrent and not particularly of your website. I have seen an herbarium with 200 collections annoted S. scutellata and none was !

If you want, I can see those collections and try to give you an orientation but now, I'll go in my mountains in 10 minutes to collect Scutellinias ;)
So, this evening or tomorrow...

Amically,
Beñat

Re : Mushroom Observer's Scutellinia Mess
That's the problem in a "democratic" way of determination. The fact that many persons agrees with a determination does not means that the determination is correct.
I have tried a couple of times to "correct" the determination of some Helvella species, but it is impossible to change the "current consensus" even when it's clearly wrong.

Re : Mario & Beñat
Your input is extremely valuable to Mushroom Observer, despite the responses (or lack thereof) you may have received in your attempts to contribute. The site is in great need of specialists in so many groups, particularly Ascomycetes, as they are among the most ignored and/or haphazardly identified of all fungi on the site. Whatever I can do to encourage your taxonomic torch into our Basidiomycete-biased cave, I will.

I would suggest offering your perspectives in any of the following comment threads:

http://mushroomobserver.org/26456
http://mushroomobserver.org/34908
http://mushroomobserver.org/76607

where my recommendation to limit the proposal of species names on observations without microscopic examination has been met with stern opposition.

Of course, any comments or general Scutellinia education you wish to offer here in this thread is greatly appreciated as well.

Kind Regards,

-Danny

Re : Mushroom Observer's Scutellinia Mess

Dear Danny,

Mushroomobserver's pages don't want to open.
I can retry much later but I want to say one thing about ascomycetes :
I am very agree with your recommendation ! Microscopy is obligatory ! And, sometimes, it doesn't give sufficient informations.

About Scutellinia's studies, I can give only one council : read the document written by René Dougoud on studies of discomycetes. All of the protocols and councils are presented.
The contributors of MObserver could find it here :

version 2008 : http://www.ascofrance.com/uploads/document/56.CV-0001.pdf
version 2013 if you're member of ascomycete.org : http://www.ascomycete.org/Accueil/tabid/105/ID/9/Contribution-a-letude-des-discomycetes--nouvelle-version.aspx

On Scutellinias specifically, I can say three things but keep on mind that's just my opinion. I'm passionated and I study only this genus since several years but it doesn't say I have reason :
- Microscopy obligatory, with photos in water (verifying guttulated spores, verifying hairs), with sporogram or mature spores in asci in blue coton heated to boiling point, with photos of hairs bases and measurements of spores and hairs are the minimum.
- A lot of species are misidentified since several years because a lot of interpretations and publications, because too synonymized, because it seems easy and it's not ! For example, I have seen a lot of typus and I can say that's very difficult to give certain names like "scutellata" or others.
- It's very necessary to make a serious job but this notion is opposed to certain necessity to put photos on one forum or publish a lot of articles... it depends on persons !

Amically,

Beñat

Adio Danny,

I have read yours links and I have made a response to the last one.
I hope I don't disturb and all MO contributors don't feel me as a pedantic in the text...

Best regards,
Beñat

Beñat?,

Your comments could not possibly be anything but a meaningful contribution to Mushroom Observer.  Byrain has just thanked you as well (see: http://mushroomobserver.org/26456).  We hope you'll continue to offer your insights throughout the rest of our Scutellinia pages, not to mention the rest of the site.

Best,

-Danny
