Scutellinia on wood
Malcolm Greaves, 30-10-2012 14:41
Malcolm GreavesThis Scutellinia was on rotten wood in a damp woodland.
Apothecia 5-7mm
Two types of hair the marginal hairs maximum of 620 with thich walls and septate and a simple or bi-furcate base
Others paler and non septate and broader (max 45um)
The spores average 22 x 12.2 Q 1.8

With a Q of less than 2 S cejpii was ruled out
so the best I can suggest is S heterosculpturata but this does not grow on wood.

Your thoughts would be appreciated.

Re : Scutellinia on wood

salut mal,

what do you think of s. subhirtella? i think the ornamentation (mediumsized, isolated warts) fits quite well!

Dirk
Thanks for that. It is one that I considered but the hair width put me off. Looking now the spores do look good for that species.

Re : Scutellinia on wood
Dear Mal,

It is not heterosculpturata, sure.
It is not subhirtella, sure.
So, in fact, in my first impression, I think that is perhaps cejpii. Is it on coniferous wood ?
Perhaps, it's another species... But, spores are inequilateral in one of your photos and sporal ornementation could be correspond. The Q of cejpii is > 1.7, sometimes >2, but not always !
I don't know... Could you send me this specimen (with the collection of "Scutellinia setosa" in your other message) ?

Of course. At this rate it could be a few specimens as I have more to come.

Dear Mal,

Perhaps I have misunderstood your message... But are you annoyed by my incessant demands? ? It's not an obligation, just if you can.
If you want, you can keep it. It's not a problem...
I don't know if I have understood correctly...?

Re : Scutellinia on wood
salut benad,

if we consider the first spore-foto of malcolm in cotton blue, its hard for me to believe, that this can be ceijpi.
in my only collection of the species i made the spores were v e r y narrow and had an extremly rough and irregular ornamentation.

Re : Scutellinia on wood
Adio Dirk,

I'm agree with you on the first photo...
But hairs (high and walls) and spores on second and third photos could be correspond...
And I have put the term "perhaps" because I'm not sure on determination...
But heterosculpturata and subhirtella aren't good hypothesis, sure.
I don't know, and I hope a response from Mal about my question around my request... ?

Beñat

PS : your collection : Is it from Deutschland ? Is it in coniferous forest ? Altitude ?
I want to verify an hypothesis on habitat of S. cejpii : generally in coniferous or mixed forest, on soil, needles or coniferous wood, in mountain areas, or areas with a similar climate (rain > 1500 m and humid air always)...etc. For me, it's an acidophil species.

Re : Scutellinia on wood
dear benat,

what you say about ecology is very close to the ecology of my cejpii-collection!
it was indeed on the ground in picea-forest (edge of forest road), ca. 500m altitude in "thüringer wald". a quite cold and humid place ... 22-8-11, after heavy rainfalls.
and yes: acid ground.

Beñat?
There is no problem and I have taken no offence from your reply. I am more than happy to send any specimens for your examination. I am trying to learn about this group but am finding it very difficult so any help is very much apreciated.

Dear Mal,
Many thanks. I'm sorry but my english level is bad sometimes...

Dear Dirk,
Thanks a lot. Another collection in this sort of habitat.
