Hi all,yesterday I collected a Vialaea in the garden of my office from a dead, still attached twig of Ilex aquifolium.
It will be surely V. insculpta, but can someone provide: P.F. Cannon, Studies on fungi with isthmoid ascospores: the genus Vialaea, with the description of the new family Vialaeaceae, Mycological Research, Volume 99, Issue 3, March 1995, Pages 367-373. ?

I am looking for a viable collection of Vialaea insculpta to get a pure culture for molecular work. One problem is that it does not occur in Ontario and the second problem is that ascospores do not germinate under any of the usual lab methods I have tried. However, if you should find it on Ilex twigs I would be pleased to try again to grow it on sterilized host tissue. There is an illustration in Dennis, British Ascomycetes 1968 Fig. 23C. The beak or beaks on the center of a brown ring are a good clue. There are usually several perithecia clustered together under the thick cuticle and bark.

I will contact Shoemaker since there are abundant ascocarps left on this twig. I had the same experience that there are clusters of perithecia protuding their necks to an opening in the epidermis. It took me a lot of slides to find living specimen, many were dead. But anyway we should give them a try and I will check on Monday if there are more twigs to collect on this shrub.
