Diaporthale on Juglans regia
Enrique Rubio, 30-04-2012 19:02
Enrique RubioDear friends of the forum

I need your help with this fungus that forms inmersed perithecia flask-shaped up to 250 microns. These perithecia, solitary, in pairs or in 'valsoid' groups have short or long necks with ostioles scarcely protruding and very inconspicuous. I have seen any obvious stroma or stromatic disk. No black line. I had seen these perithecia only when I cut the branch, because I was not suspecting that they are here.
The perithecia are placed just below the periderm with short necks or at some mm and then its necks are longer.
The branches of Juglans regia are 20 mm in diam. and they are liying on the ground.
I don't know a good genus for my fungus. Maybe Cryptodiaporthe?
Many thanks again for your help.
Enrique

Have you any bibliographic information about this species?
Merci Bernard

Re : Diaporthale on Juglans regia
Melanconis carthusiana is said (Wehmeyer's key)as a species with spores with no appendages...

No gel sheat around spores ?
Melanconis is a good idea.

No gel around the spores, even in China ink.
No information about M. carthusiana in these papers (¡)

Et oui ! Bad luck. I'have just found this (Saccardo-See attached file) for M. carthusiana . You can also find pictures of spores on internet. They are absolutly not as yours. May be you can see Zotto's picture on his CD if you have it.
Good luck.

Re : Diaporthale on Juglans regia
Fear Enrique,

My suggestion is to see Wehmeyer (1941), the monograph on Phragmoporthe, Titania, Melanconis, etc.

It is similar to Melancois juglandis (Ellis & Everh.) A.H. Graves, Phytopathology 13: 311, 1923, but bears quite longer asci.
Kind regards,

Dimitar

Re : Diaporthale on Juglans regia : réponse à Enrique Rubio
Bonjour Enrique,
Amicalement

Re : Diaporthale on Juglans regia
Thank you, Paul
I think my branches are of Juglans regia because there are only three trees in a open meadow and the branches are clearly fallen. In this place there are Acer pseudoplatanus too, but they are to a 200 m of this place.
I have seen on the web the next paper on Melanconis:
NEW SPECIES FROM THE FAMILY MELANCONIDACEAE (DIAPORTHALES) IN LITHUANIA.
Ruk?eniene, Jone // Botanica Lithuanica; 2005, Vol. 11 Issue 3, p195
with a description of Melanconis appendiculata.

Maybe have you this paper?
Best regards
Enrique

Re : Diaporthale on Juglans regia; re-reponse à Enrique Rubio
Hello!Enrique,

This mystery has been solved. Volgmayr & Jaklitsch have described it as a new species: Juglanconis appendiculata, Persoonia 38: 144 (2017).
Many thanks to Hermann
