Trichonectria/Lasionectria?
Adrian Carter, 22-12-2012 14:43
Hello Forum:

Found on Epilobium sp stems.  Ascomata superficial on stems, pyriforme, 250x200u, hyaline to pale yellow, sometimes horizontal, scattered hyphal hairs around ostiole. Asci cylindrical, 60-70x10-11u, with distinct apical apparatus (predominant in Lugol's, not blue). No paraphyses; Spores hyaline, multiguttulate, eventually 3-septate, constricted at septa, end cells somewhat tapered, dark yellow in Lugol's mount.

I tried to send this once before but there may have been a problem with too many photos. Attached are a few.

Sincerely,

Adrian Carter

Re : Trichonectria/Lasionectria?
I have added a few more photos that may help. By the way there was no reaction in KOH.

The asci show a distinct apical apparatus in Lugol's but I don't believe there is a blue reaction.

The spores measure (11)13-16x(3)4-6u.

Re : Trichonectria/Lasionectria?
Hi Adrian,

I would like to see asci and ascospores in water and could you please to show ascomatal wall in vertical section?
Are the ascomata fungicolous?

Regards,
Christian

Re : Trichonectria/Lasionectria?
Hello Christian:

Thanks so much for replying. I'm afraid my photos in water may not help but attached are ascoma, asci and spores. I don't think I will be able to make a cross section since the peridium is very thin and I'm not very adept at that sort of thing. I attached a surface view on the ascomata for what it's worth.

I don't believe it's fungicolous since the ascomata seem to be superficial on the stem and no evidence of a fungus host.

I realize you may not be able to provide much information given the rather poor quality of the photos but all the material is quite colourless. However, it would be useful even if you could hazard a guess as to whether it's in the Bionectriaceae or not. Perhaps I could learn something for future reference.

Thanks again for taking the time to reply.

Sincerely,

Adrian

Re : Trichonectria/Lasionectria?
Hello Adrian,
your fungus is maybe Lasionectria but I am not sure of this because there is no known species in the genus with 3-septate ascospores. I would like to be sure that there are really 3-septate.
It would be useful to know its anamorph, so if you could send me some material, I could try to cultivate it.

Here is my address:

Thanks

Re : Trichonectria/Lasionectria?
Hello CHristian:

I will try to send a some material after the Holiday rush. I'm running a bit low on ascomata but I'd certainly appreciate you having a look.
