Pinkish on Pteridium
Marja Pennanen, 21-07-2013 14:49
Hello,

these pinkish ones are up to 0,5 mm wide.
The spores are about 6-8x2-3 and contain two guttules.
The asci are about 40-50x6-8, propably IKI-.
The paraphyses are about 3 micrometers wide, have a septa and the upper part seems glassy.
The glassy part seems to become less obvious with KOH and the guttules vanish from spores.

Any ideas?
Marja

The contents of the paraphyses are surely VBs, you can test that wirh CRB to stain the turquoise. But the drops in the spores? Would be curious if they are also vacuolar!

Re : Pinkish on Pteridium
Hi Zotto,

sorry, I have no Congo red here - should go to the local university about 50 kilometers away in Joensuu...

I just tested KOH because the paraphyse tips looked like some hairs, that may react to KOH. The reactions were odd. Anyway the fungus should be something new for me and even the genus is unclear.

Re : Pinkish on Pteridium
Hi Marja

with CRB I mean Cresyl blue (CR is Congo Red). The VBs in the paraphyses are very similar to those in Mollisia or Calycellina.

Re : Pinkish on Pteridium
Dear Zotto,

this is surely not Mollisia ;)
Just determined M. potentillae-erectae on Potentilla palustris. It should be new for Finland.
I'll check Calycellina option tomorrow. That may be possible or maybe not...

Re : Pinkish on Pteridium
Hi,
after another study, I came to the conclusion, that these are still immature.
The asci must have broken on hard pressure ealier. Now there were even bigger asci up tp 60.
The rains should now stop and I'll go to the place to pick some more one of these days. Hope they are then mature.

There are some kind of marginal cells present, maybe kind of hairs. So this could really be a Calycellina or something.

News with this later: Marja

Re : Pinkish on Pteridium
Hello,

I went and picked some more. They are still immature, but now I concentrated on the margin and add a photo of it here.
The cells seems still be developing or something, because of their glassy look. Vbs?
I'll try to collect some more later.

Re : Pinkish on Pteridium
Yes, clearly VBs of the margina region.
