Hi friends,I have received a collection from Switzerland, a small pyrenomycete growing on dead stems of Aruncus dioicus. I first thought about Leptosphaerulina, but the features have given me another direction. I think the apical apparatus reacts rb in iodine (I have seen blue-gray and red ones). This means probably Xylariales, but which one has so small fruitbodies (170-210x45-50µm!) and muriforme spores of 12-16x3-5,5µm? I have no idea, but probably anyone can say something about it.

you could verify hemiamyloidity by KOH-pretreatment. It is very rare that a pyrenomycete is hemiamyloid and I am interested in any such case.

Hi Zotto,
I am sure it does, because I have seen many asci with these colours (red and blue).
With KOH pretreatment they all would be blue, right?

A nice idea indeed! And Emil Müller overlooked the amyloidity of the bitunicate asci because he used Melzer without KOH.

I am to slow at all, I was preparing these old Sydowia-articles to include them into my literature system in a few days, so I probably would have thought about the same idea, which is great indeed. I was just thinking about Leptopeltidaceae and those strange fungi with flat fruitbodies, covered completely by epidermis layers. But the IKI reaction is totally wrong here, isn't it? That would not fit at all, Dothideomycetes aren't IKI+ like this, never never :P
I think the determination is right, Dothiopeltis arunci. But they should change its systematic position. Thanks to Eric for this.
PS. The first preparation was in Melzer, because I wanted to have the spores being dead due to the visibility of the septations. The apical reaction was red/blue already.

But who knows if they tested the material of D. arunci in Lugol...maybe it'd be worth contacting the authors and ask them about this strange hemiamyloid fungus.
