Unknown Pyreno on Phragmites
Maren Kamke,

I found this species on a Phragmitis stem which lay buried in the bottom of a pond. Diameter 0,5 mm, immersed with long beaks, Spores hyaline, aseptate, narrow, somewhat pointed at both ends, (84-100) 88,3 x 2,35 (2-3) µm. Asci IKI negative, 8-spored, up to 130 x 9.
Thank you very much
Regards, Maren

Re : Unknown Pyreno on Phragmites
Hi Maren,
this is likely an Ophioceras, an aquatic genus. There are several species diffficult to separate from each other. The number of septa is an important differential character but uneasy to make out.
See Shearer 1999, Mycologia 91, 145-156, available online on Cyberliber.
Cheers,
Jacques

Hi friends,
Yes I agree, of course. Please, try Melzer : it kills ascospores but give the good number of septa.

Re : Unknown Pyreno on Phragmites
Hallo Maren
I am very interested in aquatic and aero-aquatic fungi. Is it possible to provide more habitat details? Like how deeply submerged?, in mud? all the stem submerged, or some above water-level?
thanks
Chris
