Microthyrium on Phragmites?
Jenny Seawright, 30-04-2015 21:52
Jenny SeawrightHello all, another query from dead Phragmites stems....

Small black pseudothecia, sections under the microscope making me wonder Microthyrium but with abundant conidia (c. 4 x 1 µm) and no spores.

I found mention of M. nigroannulatum on Phragmites but without spores I'm lost!

With regards
Jenny

Hello Jenny,

First of all:I doubt if it is Phragmites you have on the first picture, and second, ; I see a lot of conidia at your last picture ?

Best,
Marco

Re : Microthyrium on Phragmites?
Hello Marco,

Thank you for your reply - if not Phragmites I'm not sure what the substrate might have been but possibly a Poaceae stem among the Phragmites?

Conidia were very abundant in all sections I examined so presumably an anomorph?

With regards,
Jenny

Re : Microthyrium on Phragmites?
Hello Jenny,

First, I think You have a Phoma or something like that;the texture of your pycnidium is angular, not striate.About the matrix, I do not think it is a Phragmites because of the obvious epidermis on your picture. Is it wooden?

Best,
Marco

Re : Microthyrium on Phragmites?
Hello Marco,

No, definitely a stem, and it appears hollow on the inside - photograph below of the piece collected (top of image) with two sections of Phragmites below.

Sorry I've no better images of the pycnidia, they varied slightly in shape and some appeared to have a small central protuberance.

A bin job methinks!

With regards,
Jenny

Don't worry Jenny!
Coelomycetes can be frustrating at the best of times and those on Poaceae are among the worst ;-)
best wishes
Chris
