Pink Orbilia on Fraxinus
Viktorie Halasu, 21-12-2019 02:09
Viktorie HalasuHello forum,

I've found this one on bark of a dead dry standing Fraxinus exc. trunk or branch (ca 10-15 cm thick), partly decorticated, bark peeling off.
Apothecia 280-580 um with glassy outgrowths. Ascus base T/L-shaped. Paraphyses not incrusted. Globose SCBs. Upper ca 6 spores turned with SB up, not fully mature, only a few free spores.

Could it be O. pseudoaristata?
Soc. Sclerencoelia fraxinicola, Thyronectria aurigera.

Thank you very much.
Viktorie

Re : Pink Orbilia on Fraxinus
Dear Viktorie

undoubtedly it is! This species actually has a rose or only slightly orange colour, although photos show also a rather bright orange, including yours. Seems a matter of white balance.

I would be glad to take up this find, there was so far no record in the east of Europe.

Re : Pink Orbilia on Fraxinus
Dear Zotto,

thank you very much for confirmation. Yes, the color is rose when seen with my eyes, I probably forgot some old WB setting in camera (or maybe there was additional yellow light from halogen desk lamp). "Take up" means I should send the material? If so, I'll do it at monday and I hope it arrives this year. To your Tübingen address, right?

There was another one about a 200 m away from this one, looking very similar but with even less mature spores, on Prunus padus (see attached photos). Should I send it too?

Re : Pink Orbilia on Fraxinus
No my god, please do not send anything. I am just working on the inclusion of 18 (!) new, well-documented orbiliaceous records from Nov. and Dec., and yours will be the next....

I only need the collection data as usual.

The young apothecia you could try to keep in a moist box for some days, maybe the spores mature.
