Sarcoscypha javanensis - identification
Andreas Gminder, 27-02-2020 11:01
Andreas GminderDear collegues,

since I found many collections of Sarcoscypha in Ethiopia, which are molecularily determined as Sarcoscypha javanensis, I was wondering who brought the (modern) concept of S. javanensis in the todays literature.
The one moleculare sequence found in GenBank refers to following:
Harrington,F.A., Pfister,D.H., Potter,D. and Donoghue,M.
TITLE Phylogenetic studies within the Pezizales: I. 18S rRNA sequence
data and classification
JOURNAL Mycologia 91 (1), 41-50 (1999)

But that can hardly be true, as HARRINGTON already in her paper of 1997 and 1998 uses a sequence of Sarcoscypha javanensis. But I have not been able to find the origin of these sequences (or may be its only one sequence). No reference to a herbarium specimen or a cited literature - or may be I'm to dumb to see it?
S. javensis Cantrell 9779 Dominican Republic mh#692 U6613 is given in HARRINGTON 1998, but to what refers "Cantrell 9779"? And Acc.-no. U6613 seems not to exist in GenBank?!

I have not been able to find any description of S. javanensis (except the original description) and would very much like to know who was the one to introduce this species concept into modern literature.
My feeling tells me that the answer might lay in the thesis of F.A. HARRINGTON, but I have not been able to obtain that, not do I know anyone who has this theses, be it in paper form or in electronic version.

So my questions are:
- wether may be anyone here has this thesis and can have a look wether there is a description and discussion of S. javanensis.
- wether anyone knows of a herbarium specimen "Cantrell 9779"
- wether someone has own expercience with this species, which is said to be distributed over the whole tropics ...

thank you and all the best,
Andreas

Re : Sarcoscypha javanensis - identification
Dear Andreas,

Cantrell may refer to S.A. Cantrell, who collected eg. Sarcoscyphaceae in Puerto Rico in 1996:

I can send you Harrington's thesis. There is a description under S. javensis. She cites a collection from Ethiopia, but the collector's name is missing.

Best regards

Martin

Du identifizierst diese Sequenz in der Genbank über die Strain-Nr: mh#692:
