What is the best way to preserve Ascobolaceae members, mostly the smaller ones that are less than 1mm and how to preserve them for herbarium purposes?How to rehydrate if I want to work on them again?
(as KOH dissolves the episporium).

The by far very best way is to study the in the fresh state. Everything else leads to minor results and includes artifacts.

I can only recomend you to read my paper from 1992 (Mycotaxon).
Preservation in Ascobolus is not different from any other ascomycete. Drying and placing in a tight plastic bag. Hoyer's liquid I remember a bit, it is killing the cells and perhaps also dissolves structures.
