Asci with hyaline spores 40-45µm x 5µm. Dark cell 13-14µm x 8-8.5µm with transverse septum across the mature spore. The subapical globulus seems to be absent. On cervid dung.

Doesn't fit with C. septetentrionalis in that the peridium is consistently not violet/purple, not hairy (which can be an evanescent characteristic), and spore measurements are somewhat shorter. The shape of the peridium is also somewhat different from Lundquist's description.

Doesn't fit with C. sordarioides because it lacks subapical globulus, dark cell smaller.

Any ideas?

Are you sure there is no globule at the top of the asci? How long are the appendages and are they equal?

Thank you. I am not very familiar with this genus, so I am not quite sure how to interpret whether there is a subapical globus here. It looks to me like there probably isn't?

The pedicel is ~ 25µm. I have not been able to get good measurements of the caudae so far. It is rare to find mature spores.

thank you for your suggestion. The habitat and substrate, and lack of violet peridial color as well as spore size all fit well. Lundquist does not mention or illustrate a transverse septum for this species. Can I assume that this can nonetheless occur? I am not very familiar with Cercophora.

Excuse me Sigrid, I forgot to answer you. Indeed, C.silvatica could correspond. You can check the presence of flexible hairs as well as the rather brown color of the perithecium, and the slightly eccentric position of the germinal pore.

Thank you Bernard, eccentric germ pore, brown peridium correspond; most specimens seem to have no hairs, but a couple of them did, so I consider this mystery solved. Thank you!
