B ShelbourneCudoniella tenuispora: Distinctive macro and habit
I need a bit of help with a Helvella collection I made yesterday in Vermont (northeastern US) on a moss covered log in mixed woods. The fruiting bodies are light grayish tan on the excipular surface, finely hairy. The fertile surface is light gray. The cups measured 15mm x 12mm x 8mm tall. Stipe is 18mm long x 3 mm at the base, slightly thinner at the apex. Asci are 233- 318 x 20-23µm. Spores are 20-24 x 10-12µm with one to 3 large oil droplets with fine stippled texture in cotton blue. Using the key in Abbott and Currah "The Helvellaceae: Systematic Revision and Occurance in Northern and Northwestern North America", I arrived at Helvella chinensis. But I note that the spore size of my collection is quite different. Any thoughts?
Thanks to all,
Ethan
