Hyaline asco on fir needles
Francois Guay, 16-05-2025 05:47
Francois GuayI found this super tiny hyaline asco on fir needles today in Quebec,Canada.

Asci 8 spored, dextrinoid tip in IKI

Spores 21,3-24,35 × 6,1-7,75 µm with  up to 3 septa

iNat link for photos: https://www.inaturalist.ca/observations/281311665

Does anyone know what it is?
Thank you

François Guay

Re : Hyaline asco on fir needles
What a nice fungus! I have nothing in my database on conifer needles with such a spore size.

The IKI reaction is hemiamyloid, not dextrinoid. After KOH you will get a blue reaction.

I have no idea about a genus. The paraphyses seem to exlude Allophylaria.

Thank you for the precision Zotto! Once again, a mysterious fungi. I will try to sequence it and keep you updated.

Re : Hyaline asco on fir needles
I don't have idea about the species, but I've seen it on Tsuga canadensis needles.  (https://inaturalist.ca/observations/157406568).
I also found very much the same species in Zotto's folder in Durella group - spruce needles.

Ha! This way it must go, my head is too small to keep the overview. I put them together and leave them in Durella.

Re : Hyaline asco on fir needles
Thank you, Igor. I re-examined my collection and I think mine also grows on Tsuga canadensis needles, not fir. Did you have your collection sequenced? I’ll try to send mine.

Re : Hyaline asco on fir needles
No Francois, I didn't sequenced it. I had only one needle with these cups and I've used them all for my microscopy.
