Black erumpent on Populus (Ascodichaenaceae?)
Edvin Johannesen, 30-06-2025 12:09
Edvin JohannesenThis tiny, rather "rough" erumpent asco was found on a decorticated twig of Populus tremula. Less than 1 mm in diameter. Spores ca. 10-11 x 3-4 µm, slightly bent (allantoid), hyaline, 1-celled. Asci IKI-. Paraphyses filiform, guttulate, somewhat branched. Greeninsh "resinous" substance in hymenium (KOH) - bluish green in Lugol. I'm thinking Rhytismatales/Ascodichaenaceae, possibly Pseudophacidium. P. ledi does not grow on Populus, does it?

Any suggestions?

Re : Black erumpent on Populus (Ascodichaenaceae?)
Hi Edvin!

Interesting, is this from the monitored Populus log?

I think it could be related to Starbaeckia pseudotryblidioides, which is however only known from Pinus. The macro and micro resemblance is great. I have similar collections from Picea and Larix.

This sample would be interesting to sequence too.

Thanks, Adam. Yes, it's from the same Populus log. There is one specimen of S. pseudotryblidioides from Norway (Nordén 2020), but I haven't checked on what substrate. I'll get back to you.

Cheers!

Adam,

It turns out Mathias Andreasen (NINA in Oslo) would very much like to try to sequence it as part of ongoing work. However, it seems like we have more and can find even more material, so it should be possible to send to you, if you're interested.

Cheers and thanks for the response/interest!

Ha, that is a really special tree:). Hmm, if the material is not too rich it is perhaps better not to split it and I can later contact Mathias to compare our data.
If it is truly no problem to collect more, I'm really interested. Later I will send you pics of similar colls.
Thank you again:)!!

We'll see. Two attempts to sequence are better than one :-)
