Sphaerulina cornicola versus Septoria cornina
Bernard Declercq, 16-07-2025 17:34
Bernard DeclercqHello,

I have trouble distinguishing above mentioned species.
Following paper could be helpful:

IMI Descriptions of Fungi and Bacteria No. 1583  - SEPTORIA CORNICOLA

Can anyone supply me a pdf of this paper?

Thanks in advance for your help.

Bernard

Re : Sphaerulina cornicola versus Septoria cornina
Dear Bernard,

unfortunately, I don't have access to the paper that you mention, but I have access to a preliminary version of a key on anamorphic ascomycetes on living plants by Friedemann Klenke and Julia Kruse (to be released online within the near future) which keys out the various fungi on Cornus.

Septoria cornina: Conidia lunate or hook-shaped, curved, 4-6 celled, (26-)34-60 µm x 2-2,5(-3) µm, pycnidia 74-102 µm diameter, not rare on C. sanguinea

Septoria cornicola: Conidia nearly straight, (2-)4-7 celled, 24-42(-52) µm x (2-)2,5-3,5(-4) µm, pycnidia 52-120 µm diameter, not rare on C. sanguinea, rare on C. alba, C. mas, C. sericea, C. stolonifera

Sphaerulina cornicola: conidia one-celled, hyaline, (4,5-)5-9(-10) µm x (2,5-)4-4,5(-5) µm, pycnidia 150-220 µm diameter, leaf spots blackish red, later fading in the center, not rare on C. snaguinea, rare on C. alba.

Best,

Björn

Re : Sphaerulina cornicola versus Septoria cornina
Dear Björn,

thanks trying to help me.
There is something wrong with your key. Septoria cornicola is a synonym of Sphaerulina cornicola according to Verkley et al. (2013).
