bitunicate ascomycete on dead Sphagnum from Norway
Lothar Krieglsteiner, 18-08-2025 15:17
Lothar Krieglsteiner... on 6.7.25 in a subarctic mire near a small lake.
The 2-celled spores are slighly to strongly constricted at the septum, they are multiguttulate in living state, the guttules confluent in dead stage. The spores are about (22)-28-35/11-14 µm large. There are hyaline and ramifying pseudoparaphyses (I am not sure if the term is correct here).
Who can provide me with a hint?
Yoüurs, Lothar

Re : bitunicate ascomycete on dead Sphagnum from Norway
Hi Lothar,

Maybe it is Bryobroma (syn. Bryomyces), similar to a previous collection you made from Nowellia. The large, pigmented mycelium froming a reticulate structure over the host cells is a good feature for the genus. I am not certain.

Other options include relatives of the algicolous / lichenised Collemopsidium or Monascostroma. Any further look at the mycelium should help to narrow it down.

All the best,
George
