Hello everyone,
I found what I think might be Protocrea on bark in a New York State park last weekend.
I do not detect any trace of a polypore as host. There were many other fungi on the same wood: Panellus stipticus, Anteaglonium globosum, Stereum sp. and something Corticioid.
It has amber perithecia and a white floccose subiculum. Turns red in KOH. Spores are smooth and disarticulate in the ascus. They are asymmetrical with the distal end globose, about 3.3 x 3µm and the proximal end longer, about 4.1 x 2.6µm.
Could it be Protocrea pallida which has completely obliterated the host? Or is this something else?
Thank you in advance,
Ethan
