White asco on Fagus grandifolia leaf
Francois Guay, 03-10-2025 22:17
Francois GuayHi everyone,

I found this white, star-shaped asco on a Fagus grandifolia leaf in Quebec, Canada.

Spores: 15–16.6 × 3.5–4.3 µm

Asci: IKI+

Here’s the iNat link with photos and microscopy:

Any idea what it could be?

Thanks!

I do not understand the macroscopy. Are the apos stalked or sessile and what about the toothed receptacle? What are the teeth composed of?

Microscopy recalls H. caudatus agg.

Re : White asco on Fagus grandifolia leaf
Yes, the apothecia were short-stalked. I think the "star shape" is just an unusual shape; next to them were some other apothecia with a regular form like other Hymenoscyphus. The teeth were just like the rest of the hymenium.
Thanks Zotto
