GamundI de Amos, I. J. 1956. El genero Scutellinia en la Argentina. . "Contr. Ci. Univ. Buenos Aires Fac. Ci. Exact., Ser. Bot.". 1 pp 69-88. Merci d'avance, Beñat

Hello everyone,
My name is Mustafa Emre Akçay, and I am a faculty member in the Department of Biology at Yüzüncü Yil University. My research focuses on fungal systematics.

Between May 19-23, 2025, I have the opportunity to visit a biology-related institute or company in Paris, Brussels, or Amsterdam as part of the Erasmus+ Academic Staff Mobility program. However, to proceed with this visit, I need to submit an invitation/acceptance letter to my university.

My visit will be limited to a few hours on a single day within the specified dates. If anyone can assist me by providing an invitation letter or guiding me in this process, please feel free to contact me.

memreakcay@yyu.edu.tr
memreakcay@gmail.com

I would greatly appreciate any support, and I sincerely thank you in advance for your help.

Best regards,
Mustafa Emre Akçay

Hello forum,

this is a tentative translation in English of Michel's words.
I speak on behalf of his closest friends to inform you of the sudden death, at his home, of Christian Lechat. Yes, our friend Christian ! The creator of this magnificent Ascofrance forum which has become, as he wished, an essential link between the members of the mycological community passionate about the study of ascomycetes. A community without borders, animated by the sharing of knowledge as much as by mutual respect.
Christian leaves us at the top of his art in the study of Hypocreales, especially Nectriaceae and Bionectriaceae, a field in which he handed on to us dozens of new species, many of which were collected in the Lesser Antilles and French Guiana.
Christian was soon to celebrate his 70th birthday, he had many publications in progress and devoted himself entirely to this immeasurable task, most often with Jacques Fournier and Amy Rosman, among other faithful and numerous friends. His expertise, recognized by the international community, earned him the Gordon and Tina Wasson Award from the prestigious Mycological Society of America in 2020.
Christian was also an actor at the local level where he chaired for nearly twenty years the Mycological Society of the Massif d'Argenson within which we organized together the fabulous meetings of Mellasco.
Ascofrance must remain this place of meetings, sharing and friendship that Christian created. We will see to it.
Michel

Hi all who might have tried to access my homepage www.invivoveritas.de during the last days. Until 13. August it is inactive, but when you want to visit the Ascomycetes you can use this link which is unaffected by the problem:
https://drive.google.com/drive/folders/0B5SeyOEkxxZhYVZub0N1aGY5YTg

Thanks
Zotto
Hypomyces leotiarum Fayod 1885 is the Sepedonium (S. leotiarum) anamorph of H. leotiicola Rogerson and Samuels 1985, According to the latest ICN there is ony one name for each fungus. Hence H. leotiicola iand Sepedonium leotiarum iare synonyms. The names are still listed separately in both Index fungorum and Mycobank but one name must be chosen according to the rules.

Hello all,

On a recent visit to the Bahamas I came across this pyrenomycete. It was growing in dense wood, which may have been Casuarina. It is very hard and carbonaceous and appears to have a brown subiculum and quite long necks, some of them a bit swollen at the apex.

Asci IKI-, 223-290 x 9.2-10.3µm

Paraphyses filiform.

Spores hyaline, multi-septate, "c" shaped. 112-129 x 3.6-4.2µm

Any ideas?

Thanks,

Ethan

Hello,

I couldn't find a name for this Ijuhya in the latest 2019 key.
On an unidentified herbal stem ca 5 mm thick. Riparian lowland forest, clearing under a power line with Reynoutria, Helianthus tuberosus and other tall plants.

Perithecium doesn't react in LA, seems to be one-layered only.
"Crown" without hairs, only very short cylindric cells are protruding on places.
Asci 8-spored. Spores straight, frequently also more or less bent to allantoid, only 1-septate, finely longitudinally striate.
Anamorph present.
Soc. Sarcopodium sp.

Thank you for any help.
Viktorie

Dear colleagues,
In a message in the forum AscoFrance dated 04-03-2016 16:45 we informed
you of our intention to publish a special jubilee number of Mycologia
Montenegrina that we would like to dedicate to the Jubilee of 25 years of Vital
Taxonomy and called for cooperation. Despite the multitude of difficulties,
Mycol. Mont. XX (electronic version) was finally published in July 2019. Please find
attached the contents of this issue. I would like to remind you that all rights
belong to EBSCO publishing, so you can order Pdfs of individual works or the
whole number there.
The printed version will appear at the latest by the end of winter. This
will be followed by a more specific notification, once we have all the details.
Best regards,
Branislav Peri? and Hans-Otto Baral

Hi all,
On a recent visit to the Bahamas, I had a layover at the airport at Nassau where I found these interesting hysterothecia growing on needles of Casuarina. They are quite small, barely reaching .5mm at the longest. Thin walled, elongated, black with a slit along the apex.
Asci subglobose, bitunicate with nipple shaped protuberance of ascus contents at the apex. 20.5-24.2 x 12.6-13.9µm

Spores are hyaline didymospores– 1-septate, constricted at the septa, upper cell larger than lower, rounded ends, one oil droplet for each cell. 8-10.3 x 3.7-5µm.

Can anyone help me identify it? Many thanks in advance.

Ethan

Hola,

Susana

Hi all,in July I found these apos (max. diameter 6 mm) that look like Sclerencoelia fascicularis on thinner fallen Fagus branches. This one is said to grow only on Populus spp. Do you think it could be it? Spores are 12,7 - 16,5 x 3,1 - 4,0 micrometers.
Hello AscoFrance, I write again on behalf of Mushroom Observer, which is always in great need of more ascomycete expertise, and always grateful for what expertise it has already received. The latest debate is here: http://mushroomobserver.org/253206 Michael Kuo, an American amateur and creator of the website MushroomExpert.com, describes Chlorosplenium chlora and C. hypochlora as being macroscopically indistinguishable from one another. The descriptions of each species in Dixon, J.R. 1974. Chlorosplenium and its segregates. I. Introduction and the genus Chlorosplenium. Mycotaxon. 1(2):65-104 (http://www.mykoweb.com/systematics/journals/Mycotaxon/Mycotaxon%20v001n2.pdf) do contain some differences, but in the notes for C. hypochlora, that species is said to only differ "on drying and in ascus and spore characters." Are the two species in fact macroscoically indistinguishable? Are their distributions/seasons/substrates separate or overlapping? Many thanks in advance, -Danny

... collected at 11.01.2018 in a macchia near Sao Bras de Alportel (Algarve).

The hemiamyloid asci are striking. I found only few free spores, in the asci they were not yet septate as far as I can say.

I found this thread:

http://www.ascofrance.com/forum/10525/calycina

Are there new insights and - I am an optimist - can perhaps a name be assigned to my specimen?

Best regards from Lothar

Hi again

What about this Sporomega/Colpoma growing on dead wood of Cistus ladanifer lying on the ground at the SW Spain?

The ascospores are 1-septate with a gel seath and an apical globule. Paraphyses with conspicuous Vbs stained blue by Cresyl blue. No yellow KOH reaction or only greenish on the dark, marginal, elements. This collection agrees with Guy Garcia's GG 04040402 and GG 05041001 from 2004 and 2005 on Calluna and Castanaea wood. But my spores are only 1-septate (not 3-septate) and lacks de yellow KOH reaction (saids 'as some Mollisia species').

Do you now some news on this fungus?

Thanks again

Dear colleagues,
you all may remember the call for papers on AscoFrance from 4.III.2016 (http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/41304) regarding Mycologia Montenegrina vol. XX (electronic version, pdf), which was finally published in July 2019 (see http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/59501).
A printed version of this volume was announced by the end of winter at the latest. Numerous adverse circumstances and finally Covid made this impossible. Now the conditions for the printed version are finally opening. Through personal communication, we got the impression that there is interest in a printed version.

You can see information about the works in the attached content. The price of MM vol. XX will be 30 € plus postage costs (10 -12 €).

So to get more accurate information about the total number of copies, we need to know which of you wants a hard copy. Some of you have already announced their wish to us, but to get a complete overview, we would like to ask you to write us an email and send us your residential address in case you want to buy it. Please email branislav@mycolmonten.org .

Please note that we will understand this as a binding order.

Best regards,
Branislav Perić and Hans-Otto Baral

Hello, I'm so enthusiastic for finding these in the twilight, that got to present them. Hopefully I managed to determine them right. These grow on Athyrium and are about 0,1 mm wide. The spores 8-12x3-4, asci 42-60x7-9 and hairs up to 70x5-6. The species has not been found in Finland at least before year 2000 and no other Nordic contry neither :) Marja

Hello forum.

last year I found a Hyalopeziza on Betula leaf, which was determined H. cf. tianschanica by Seppo. Now I found something similar, but not quite.

The fruitbodies are about 0,1 mm wide,
The spores are 5-7x2-3 and have polar droplets, which makes them dufferent from the ealier finding, where I did not see droplets and the spores are wider.
The asci are about 20-35x 6-8 and seems IKI-, last year faint IKI blue.
The hairs are with lumen, up to 90x3-4 and there are shorter a bit Cistella like hairs, too.

The macrophotos were this time a mission impossible ;)

Ideas?

Marja

Hello everyone
I found a collection of months ago (March 23). They only emerged from under the melting snow. Ascomata was old and destroyed so I could not even specify the shape of spores.
I kept them alive until today. Only one young Ascomata and a few anamorf have grown, so I could do some photos.
Some photos also made of old material.
I'm not even sure if this is Ceniengiopsis?
Any hints are welcome.
Greetings

I am letting you know that our good friend and colleague Chris Yeates had a heart attack yesterday and unfortunately the medical team were unable to resuscitate him.
This as you can imagine came as a huge shock as I was meeting him tomorrow as he had been assisting in the arrangements for the BMS autumn meeting in East Ayton, Yorkshire, UK.

The only consolation is that he was looking forward to the meeting and so passed away anticipating what he enjoyed the most.

Chris had remarkable recall for nearly everything – fungi, birds, plants, tv comedy scripts, Captain Beefheart lyrics ... A great friend and a great loss.

Chris had been to the doctors a couple of weeks ago and had complained of spells of dizziness which he had put down to the colder weather and his asthma.

The 51 participants in scarborough will try to ensure that we work hard this next week to increase the Yorkshire sp list. This was his life passion, his aim and he was well on with this project.

I'm sorry to have to pass on this very sad news to you.
Carol Hobart

Hello forum,

I would like to ask, what is your experience with the ecology of Calycina citrina vs. C. confluens? Do they have any biotop / substrate / wood size preference? I have here a small riparian forest I visit frequently (ash, oak, elm, poplar...) and for several years I keep finding only C. confluens there. So I wonder why not also C. citrina, which is supposed to be at least just as common. Does it prefer bulky beech wood?

Thank you.
Viktorie
Hi,

Collected on Marchantia polymorpha:
Apothecia subsessile, 2,5-3,5 mm diam., disc flat, yellowish orange, outer surface slightly paler, margin with inconspicuous hyaline hairs. Asci operculate, cylindrical-clavate, IKI-, biseriate 8-spored, e.g. 260-285x27-29 µm.Spores ellipsoid to ovoid, (25)31-34x15-18(20) µm, smooth, hyaline, guttulate, most probably with 1-2 large LBs but disturbed by frost. Several misshapen spores due to frost.Paraphyses 4 µm diam., branched, tip clavate and 9-12(15) µm diam., with pale orange granular content.Ectal excipulum of thick-walled, hyaline textura globulosa-angularis, covered with hyaline, thick-walled hairs, 0-3-septate, 65-135x13 µm.
This is probably a Neottiella but I do not know any species with such large spores.
Any help is welcome.

Bernard

Hello everyone,

I have been finding this fungus every year for more than 10 years and have never found a name for it. In my files I have called it Camarosporium sp., but that is clearly incorrect.

The fungus produces conidiomata on the previous season's bud scales of Abies balsamea. It is very common on older trees along the coast of the Bay of Fundy in New Brunswick. It is mature in May-June but can be found as early as January.

The conidiogenous system is hyphal and fills the centrum as a loose tangled mass. The conidiogenous cells are produced on this system and appear to be phialides. The conidia are ovoid, brown and muriform. Germination on DPYA is by continuous budding and never develops a hyphal colony.

Is anyone here familiar with this fungus?

David

Hi!

This tiny (0.2-0.3 mm), orange one is growing on a stromatic sordariomycete (overgrown by something alike Echinosphaeria) on Salix caprea. I have no ID on the sordario yet. Southern Norway in humid ravine.

The Orbilia/Hyalorbilia has broadly ellipsoid spores with one distinct SB at each pole. Measure ca. 2.5-3 x 5 micr. Spores appear more subglobose in water and more ellipsoid with slightly pointed ends in CB (see photos). Dead asci (I think) do not look truncate. Paraphyses broadly cylindrical.

Suggestions based on this limited information?

Hi all,

I do have here a fragment of a branch of Sorbus aucuparia, decorticated and with white rot, lying on the ground in a moist environment at about 1050 m height.
I recorded Lasiosphaeria ovina, Hyalorbilia inflatula and a Hypoxylon (maybe cohaerens).
Between the apothecia of the Hyalorbilia I saw another fungus whose conspicious spores were present in the slides of the Hyalorbilia as well.
My guess is a Cercophora. Dear avid microfungus collectors, We are working on the phylogeny of the Diaporthales especially the Gnomoniaceae. We have two isolates of the type species of Ophiognomonia, namely O. melanostyla, but they are slightly different. Thus we would like additional fresh collections of this species so that we can make isolations and sequence it. It occurs in spring on the undersurface of overwintered leaves of Tilia. The black perithecia are partially immersed and it has a very long beak. The ascospores are long, thin, 37-43 x 1.5 2 um. If you find this species and are willing to send it to us, please make an air-dried specimen wrapped in paper and send it to me as an herbarium specimen. Thank you! Bonjour tous
I collected this on a previous year's leaf of Quercus. The 'crystal balls' on the rather thin-walled verruculose hairs, and spore size and shape point to Lachnum rhytismatis. Croziers were present, but not very easy to find.
Although it has been reported on Quercus a few times in the UK (and Peter Thompson has had it on the 'Quercus-substitute' Castanea sativa) I would welcome confirmation, just in case I have missed something obvious.

Cordialement
Chris
Dear friends.
Yesterday evening I returned from a two-week expedition to the Natural Reserves and National Parks of the Ukrainian Carpathians. At this time there is very wet and cool, so a lot of diverse discomycetes presented. I've never seen such an abundance of them - every collected piece of substrate was covered with fruit-bodies!
Every day I thought about how it would be nice if you were there also. I plan to visit Carpathians regularly, so if someone wants to join the trip - you're welcome.

To share with you the first impressions from the trip, I spread hastily made a selection of photos of some the most common species.

Friendly,
Alex.

Bonsoir tous

while putting together the 'fungus portrait' below I checked to see what the current name was; I was extremely surprised to see that Species Fungorum now has Dothidea ranunculi Fr. as the current name - http://www.speciesfungorum.org/Names/SynSpecies.asp?RecordID=159634?
This seems crazy, after all the description for the family in Cannon & Kirk's Families of the Fungi (2008):
"Dothideaceae
Dothideales: Ascomycota
Stromata multiloculate, immersed or erumpent, usually pulvinate or crustose; black, thick-walled, opening by an apical, usually lysigenous pore. Interascal tissue lacking. Asci saccate or clavate, fissi-tunicate. Ascospores small, hyaline or brown, transversely septate."
scarcely fits this fungus. I fully appreciate that Species Fungorum is not free of inconsistencies (I have had to point out clear errors to Paul Kirk before, and they have been corrected). Nor is it always up-to-date with the latest studies (its treatment of the Peronosporales, for example is very unreliable). Does anyone have any idea where this strange taxonomic decision has come from?

Cordialement
Chris
Hello,

these pinkish ones are up to 0,5 mm wide.
The spores are about 6-8x2-3 and contain two guttules.
The asci are about 40-50x6-8, propably IKI-.
The paraphyses are about 3 micrometers wide, have a septa and the upper part seems glassy.
The glassy part seems to become less obvious with KOH and the guttules vanish from spores.

Any ideas?
Marja

Bonjour,
After a late discovery of a nice collection of Cejpia hystrix, I have just read the taxonomic demonstration which lead to the combination Cejpia hystrix (De Not.) Baral . (BARAL H.-O. 1994. Comments on "Outline of the ascomycetes - 1993". - Systema Ascomycetum 13: xx-xx. )
This text was concluded by ''Therefore, the best solution appears to adopt the genus Cejpia for the single species B. hystrix and to abandon the use of the ambiguously applied name Belonium. A thorough study of the Hysteropezizella-complex on living material is necessary to clarify the relation between Cejpia and Coronellaria.''

I wonder whether this relation has now been clarified ?
I can see in the Syllabus Ascomycota its placement in the Hysteropezizella lineage whithin the supra Mollisiaceae lineage .

Amitiés
Michel

Hi.
Only one small sporocarps (max. 4 mm in diameter) growing on moist soil in the middle of a forest road.
On the margins of the sporocarp, there is no hair at all. Only in some places can you observe flocs built of hyphae of unspecified form.
Smooth spores, surrounded by a sort of sheath (Tricharina type).
Paraphyses without content, septic, tops sometimes slightly widened and slightly curved.
No reaction to Lugol and KOH.
Any ideas?
Best regards.
Mirek

Bon soir, on a dry branch of Banksia grandis in SW-Australia grows on the bark (peridermis) among the hairy felt a nice Nectriaceae which was at first sight taken for an Orbilia. It is characterized by rather large spores. The orange peridium turns deep pink in KOH and does not seem to have a perceptible ostiole. Any idea? I have not tried any key. Sp. *29-31 x 9.5-10.3 µm, smooth, hyaline. Many spores still alive 13 months after collection. There is also a polysporous Nitschkia (?broomeana) on this branch. Zotto

Dear all,

reviewing my collections from Ethiopia, we also came across some Scutellinia collections. And aready the first one poses problems to us.

Spores have an ornamentation a bit comperable to S. scutellata, by confluent warts and plaques of different shape, but is coarser and higher as in S. scutellata. Hairs at the margin multifurcate and very long, up to 1600 (-2000 µm), whereas on the flanks they are remarkably shorter and only up to 150-200 µm. Attention: the measures for hair width has to be taken x2,5 (values were in 400x magnification ...)
See attached fotos and scetch (drawing by Sylvie).

It would be nice to have an opinion from the experts :-)

all the best and a happy New Year to you,
Andreas and Sylvie

Salut à tous,

I found this inconspicous Orbilia on Malus x scheideckeri in the South of England that I'd like some help with. The branch was dead, still attached and 6 ft from the ground.

51.093°N 0.1787°W, 96m above sea level

Unfortunately I have no material left, but I visit the site often so I have a fair chance of recollection.

Apothecia to about 0.8mm

Ascospores 4.2 - 5 x 2 - 2.6, smooth, C-shaped, with a large tearshaped-globose SB and sometimes a few smaller ones.

Although easy to see, I found the spores almost impossible to photograph - I hope they can be seen on the composite image, but if not I can provide a crop or illustration....

I've used one of Zotto's old keys, which leads me to O.vibrioides (I think! - I don't have much experience using keys to Orbilia). The spore size matches well but I can't find any further information on this species. Have I got it right?

Amitiés,

Nick

Hello,
I found and collected this propoloid ascomycete scarcely growing on the bark of a living tree (Pinus sylvestris) on the 12th of December, this year. It was found in the same area as my previous post (Fagerfjell, municipality of Flesberg, Buskerud county), but on a different locality. This locality is an open, old, pine dominated forest about 610 m.a.s.l.

The ascospores are cylindrical to ellipsoid and are filled with small guttules.

19,2-27,2 x 11,2-14,4 µm

Me= 21,9 x 12,31 µm

The spore wall is about 0,96-1,5 µm (living) and 1,7-2,8 µm (dead)

The asci are about 126-147 x 18 µm (dead)

The spores were measured in the living state, but I was unable to obtain a spore print. The large variation in the spore measurements may be due to some of the spores being partially immature. All measurements were taken from fresh material in water.

Although the spores are a bit small I believe that this resembles Propolis leonis quite well. However, that species has primarily been recorded in areas close to the coast. Could this be the right species, and is anyone aware of P. leonis or a similar species being recorded from submontane regions inland?

Thank you in advance and best regards,

Hulda

I came by a shrub of some kind in a park-like environment and found these guys growing beneath it, on blackened twigs.

The apos were fairly tough and yellowing.

Asci with croziers, IKI+, paraphyses with VBs. If I interpreted correctly, the medullary excipulum is of textura intricata and ectal excipulum of textura prismatica.

Spores:

(15.7) 16.7 - 18.9 (20.5) × (4) 4.3 - 4.9 (5) µm
Q = (3.2) 3.7 - 4 (5.1) ; N = 20
Me = 17.8 × 4.6 µm ; Qe = 3.9

Might someone know what the species could be?

Hi, I found an interesting ascomycete on the skin of an olive fruit lying on humid ground. According to my interpretation there is a core of profusely branched, yellow, pennillate conidiophores (phialides, etc) overtoped by distinct, broad, cylindrical, septate, very curved paraphysis with the last elemnt slightly swollen. Conidia cylindrical with rounded heads . Some interesting features:

1. Large amounts of conidiospores measuring (6)7-8(9) x 2-3 um, cylindrical and slightly curved with rounded ends
2. Numerous snake-like (curved) paraphyses, 2-3 septate, clavate with very rough (densely verrucose) walls

3. Dense and x2 (or more) branched penicillate conidiophores that are much shorter from the paraphyses

4. Structural cells with deep yellow pigment, more or less subsphericall

These fruiting bodies are erupting from the fruit's pulp (not superficial)

Spores' size:

(6.1) 6.8 - 8.5 (9.1) × (2.2) 2.3 - 2.8 (2.9) µm

Q = (2.2) 2.5 - 3.5 (3.9) ; N=27

V = (18) 21 - 33 (38) µm3

Me = 7.7 × 2.5 µm ; Qe = 3 ; Ve = 26 µm3

Hi All,
In April I found what I believe to be Trizodia acrobia in carr woodland in North Wales. This poorly known species would be a new genus to Britain. The only thing is that the ascomata were growing on a waterlogged stick rather than on Sphagnum as in Fungi of Temperate Europe so I was wondering if this is important or if there are other Trizodias out there. Also, I've been told that some lichenologists regard it as a lichen owing to its association with cyanobacteria. I was wondering what the latest state of play is on this.

Here is a description of the North Wales material:

Trizodia acrobia, Morfa Bychan, North Wales, (VC48, SH547369), 13/4/23.
Ascomata consisting of more or less globose, whitish, gelatinous pustules up to c.0.5mm, seated or even immersed in algal scum.
Asci: clavate, rather thick walled, 80-98x14-16µm.
Ascospores: 14-15x7.5-9 µm, pyriform.
Hyphae hyaline, thin to slightly thick-walled, 2-3 wide.
Paraphyses somewhat flexuose, slightly swollen to 3-4.5 at apex, sometimes branching, septate.

Best wishes,

Charles.

Hi,
I found a few specimens of a small Helvella under a small Cistus creticus and close to Pistacia lentiscus at Wardija, Malta. No large trees were in the vicinity.

The specimens measure 18-20mm x 20-25mm.

Asci were about 280-285µm x 19-21µm, J-ve and biseptate, Paraphyses slightly inflated with 6-7µm at the tips, Spores with large central oil drop 19.3-22.2 x 12.5-14.1µm; Q = 1.40 - 1.67, Mean = 20.8 x 13.4 µm ; Qe = 1.5

This species appears to be associated with Cistus as the specimens were close to the roots. I had found some similar specimens in a different location some time back but there were no Cistus or Pistacia but Olive trees, conifers and Pinus halapensis. Is this specimen H. semiobruta or H. helvellula?
Hi everyone,
This is a lichenicolous fungus found growing on the lobes of _Sticta limbata_. Does anyone have any idea about what it
could be?
I attach a collection of photos with the specimen and the corresponding microscopy. The spores are hialine, simple, guttulate (mostly with one or two drops), many of them have one of the ends plane (truncate), with the following dimensions:
(6.9) 8.5 – 11.7 (12.2) x (5.2) 5.6 – 6.9 (7.6) µm
Q = (1.1) 1.3 – 1.9 (2.1) ; N = 35
Me = 9.8 × 6.2 µm ; Qe = 1.6 .
Thanks,
zaca

Donc question! Me suis-je trompé? Yannick Mourgues

Hi everyone,

A few days ago I found these small whitish discs with small stalks on a dead Quercus twig.

Spores are 1-septate: 9,0-11,0 x 2,5-3,2 µm.
See the pictures for some other details.

I looked around a bit, but I cannot find a right genus yet.

Can anyone point me in the right direction?
Thanks in advance.
Best regards, William
Dear friends,

I am searching plate CCXI that belongs to the following publication:

Cavara, F. (1900) - Di una nuova Laboulbeniacea, Rickia Wasmannii, nov. gen. et nov. spec. Revue mycologique vol. 22: 155–156.
The text is online available, but the plate seems to be missing.

Who can help me?
With kind regards,

Ron Bronckers

Hallo everybody,
On a new collection of alpaca dung grows a very small ascomycete. This fungus is much smaller than the one of the former collection, but in some way the spores resembles the ones of the former one on alpaca dung. (which is probably Onygenales, Neven is still examining it)
The size of the fungus is about 400µ. It seems, that the spores are in most cases roundish and in a few cases ellipsoid. The paraphyses seem to contain somewhat greenish oil drops. The spores are about 9 µ diameter. On the last photo you can see that the asci are opening with a split. I didn´t see any reaction with Lugol.
I need again help with the determination, since I don´t even know the genus.

Best regards
Christiane

Greetings

Found on Oryctolagus cuniculus dung, apothecia 200 x 170 µm, inamyloid.
Asci 67-90 x 14-19 µm.
Paraphyses filiform, some curved at apex but I wouldn't descibe them as uncinate.
Spores 11.5-14.9 x 7.0-8.6 µm, uniseriate and biseriate.
Excipulum textura globulosa-angularis.

I've compared this with Coprotus leucopocillum using Doveri as the main reference. The spores are too small for this species; the asci not markedly clavate; and this species also has the spores almost entirely biseriate.

I would welcome members' comments.

Regards, Chris

Susana
Zotto, i checked this specimen shortly and it similar with your drawings. But you said you are interested in fresh state? (now it is not fresh, but some pictures were done in vital, plus i remember well the place it was collected and may visit it again).
The main difference: there are two types of paraphyses: filiform and lanceolate (I don't think that it is underdeveloped, rather two different).

Apothecia turbinate, short-stipitate, up to 0,5 mm in diametre, 0,5 mm high, outer surface smooth, brown, edge (collar) lighter, narrow, hymenium grayish, concave; growing in dense groups.
Excipulum from textura oblita; asci cylindrical, with croziers, with euamyloid pore, about 50 x 6,5; paraphyses of two types: filiform and lanceolate in one apothecium, filiform scarsely branched, 1,5 mk broad, some enlarged at tips, lanceolate exceeding the asci by 10 mk, up to 3,5 mk in largest part, with 2-3 septa in lower part, may be with thin outbranches; spores ellipsoid, slightly curved, with two big guttules (vital, i suppose it was in water), 10,7 (10-11,8) x 3,3 (3,1-3,5) (N=12).

On dead leaves of Milium effususm, coniferous mixed forest, N61,086961 E69,466226, 12.06.2012.

Dear all,
I hope to investigate the population genetics of Hypocreopsis rhododendri, and I would therefore like to visit some sites at which the fungus occurs in France. I have the records given in Candoussau, F. (1990) Hypocreopsis rhododendri in southern France. Mycologist, 4(4), 170-171, but I'm struggling to work out exactly where the sites are.
I would be very grateful if anyone could give me any information on where exactly this fantastic fungus may be found.
Many thanks!
Katherine.

P.S. The records given in the paper are:
Lourdois, Pays de Boretous, 300 m, near a creek, Arudy
Ossau Valley, 200 m, near Arudy
Thermes de Lurbe St Christau, 200 m, Lannes
Pays de Boretous, 600 m, Route de Somport.
Pont de la Bique, 850 m.

Hi. I found this hymenoscyphus on died branches from Salix caprea, at the edge of a peat bog in 1300m of height in Lozère (48) France. Micro : Asci arrising from croziers, IKI+ strongly blue in Lugol, 110-140x8-10 um Paraphyses septates, filiform with rounded apex, with many refractives guttules (apos becoming red when hurted), width = 2-3 um. Spores cylindrical, not scuttuloid, filled with many small guttules at each side, not septate, 15,4-17,2x5,1-5,9 um Q=2,7-3,2 N=30 With keys I have, I arrive to H. macroguttatis. But I'm not convinced. What do you think about it ??? Yannick Mourgues

Yannick

Bonsoir tous
this rather difficult-to-see asco was collected on a dead stem of Urtica dioica, around an old leaf-node.
Asci taking a while (15-20 minutes) to respond to IKI, but then apices blue without KOH.
Ascospores fasciculate in the ascus, multi-guttulate, cylindric to narrow clavate, 41.7-57 x 2-2.5µm; up to 9-septate.
This looks very close to Zotto's HB 6113, provisionally named Karstenia 'guttulata". Any comments would be very welcome . . .

amitiés
Chris
Me parece Eupropolella celata.
¿Que os parece a vosotros?
Saludos

Hi to all!
Apothecia foliar intradermal, distinguished by dark spots on the surface of the sheet up to 0.5 mm in diameter. Hi,

these tiny hairy ones are about 0,1 mm wide.
The spores are about 6-7x2 and asci about 25-30x5-7.
The hairs are glassy, with a lumen and up to 100x3-4 long.

Hyalopeziza pygmaea is similar, but the hairs should be shorter.
Any other ideas?

Marja
I made an abundant collection of some Preussia/Sporormiella on dung of hazel grouze (Tetrastes bonasia) in western Finland. It is somewhere in the neighbourhood of leporina - subtilis but I have difficulties in finding a good match.
The spores are (26.7) 27.8 - 34.9 (36.9) × (4.8) 5.0 - 6.3 (6.8) µm, soon breaking up into four part spores. The asci are (108.7) 120.4 - 151.5 (184.7) × (10.1) 11.6 - 14.2 (14.6) µm. Other details in the photos.

Ideas, anybody?

------

Update: I was wrong about the substrate - it is black grouse (Tetrao/Lyrurus tetrix).

Bonjour,
Michel

Hello all,

These were found by my friend recently in Central Park in New York on a branch of what appears to be hardwood. At first they were closed but became cupulate when hydrated. They are sessile, about 1mm in diameter with brown hairs on the outside which become paler near the margin. The hymenium is tan or off-white. Asci 79-87 by 7-9µm, IKI-. Spores cylindrical, somewhat allantoid, hyaline, 13-17 by 3-3.5µm. I wasn't able to take a lot of photos or measurements of hairs or paraphyses etc., but I do still have access to the collection. I was thinking that the microscopic features are similar to T. perrotioides which I found in Zotto's drive. Any thoughts? Many thanks in advance for your comments.

Ethan

Bonsoir. Yannick

Hello all - lichenicolous fungus help needed this time please!

Densely clustered very small black perithecia on the apothecia of Lecanora confusa, completely blackening the host apothecia. Spores 1-septate, brown (green-brown to brown in asci) (10) 12-13 (15) x (4)5-7 µm.

No host spores to be seen and I did a second section from a different apothecia just to be very certain that it wasn't just Amandinea punctata among the Lecanora.

Stigmidium congestum has just been confirmed (by BJC) from L. chlarotera in the same 1km square but the spores of my specimen are wider than the measurement of (2.5)3-4 µm given in the 2010 4th draft Key to Lichenicolous Fungi.

Spore width fits better with that given for S. squamariae but that is only included in the key on Lecanora polytropa........

With regards,
Jenny

I have found an interesting Xylaria growing on fallen drupes of olives which were still immature for a proper morphological examination, however I did sequence it with ITS and LSU and the Lab had suggested that it is closely related to X. palmicola GU322436 and Xylaria sp. ON248209 further adding that it may likely be an undescribed species.

I am writing to see if anyone is interested to examine my specimens and sequences for a possible article (I would be happy to step as a co-author). The bad news is that I have to recollect more specimens as I only have three left.

Anyone interested feel free to contact me

Hello dear forum,
There are two close species which are going to be send to Danny Halewartes soon for detailed study, but i also wanted to show them here.

Plus I am sending to him these taxonomically related earlier posted samples:
Cyathicula starbaeckii http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/22273
Crocicreas gramineum http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/22254

The first species is close by macro-morphology to Stamnaria persoonii, but has spores more cylindrical, paraphyses of two types and its host is different (E. sylvaticum).

Stamnaria sp., Kh-3519, 09.06.2012, 61,070617N 69,468112E, Russia, Khanty-Mansiyskyi avtonomniy okrug, Khanty-Mansiysk, Shapsha village, Coniferous mixed forest. On litter of Equisetum sylvaticum.

Apothecia turbinate, stipitate, 0.4-0.6 mm in diameter in mature state, 0.5-0.7 mm height; yellow with whitish collar and translucent stem when alive, becoming light brown on drying; when dry collar closes the hymenium making flat crest; scattered abundantly on branches of Equisetum sylvaticum.

Outer layer of apothecium made by gelatinose loosely more or less parallel hyphae, septate, 2-3 mk broad; inner layer of excipulum made from textura prismatica, cells of middle flanks near 30 x 10 mk, shorter to the edge; medulla well developed from wide segmented hyphae, cells near 50 x 7 mk; subhymenium well developed, from intricate hyphae; raising under the hymenium part (collar) has inner layer made from similar to gelatinose narrow hyphae, free upper part of these hyphae covered by warts (outgrowths).

Asci cylindrical, ascus development starts from crozier, barely seen in mature asci, with apical thickening, with euamyloid ring of "Calycina-type", †98 x 9 (90-110 x 8-10.5) mk (measured in dead state); paraphyses of two types; first type of lanceolate paraphyses exceed asci for 30-40 mk, segmented in lower part, lanceolate in upper part with quite acute tip, vacuolar content in vital state not observed, †100-130 mk long and 3-6 mk broad in lanceolate part; second type of cylindrical paraphyses more abundant, not exceed the asci, †80-100 mk long and about 2 mk broad, segmented, cylindrical with obtuse tip, rarely branched and scarcely some enlarged in upper segment; spores fusiform, slightly heteropolar, with obtuse ends, guttulate (but character of guttulae not observed in vital state), †22 x 4.2 (19.4-23.6 x 3.8-4.6) mk, n=20, Q=5.3.

Bonjour,

I have lately been given a puzzling collection ( unfortunately in poor state) on very rotten wood (Sambucus nigra most probable) covered with mosses.
Hymenium looks like a Mollisia but apos are more cupulate and may have sort of dark brown stipes and thick ans also dark ectal .
Ectal is of globulose cells,
Ascus 90-120 x 9-10 µm, H+ and IKI + (Calycina type)
Spores guttulate fusoid , 11-14 x 3 µm
Paraphyses cylindrical, hyaline, no VBs , x 2 µm
CRB gives a pink-red reaction to hymenium ( Gelatinose tissues ?)
I did not test KOH and there is no material left
I do not even guess what the genus could be and wonder whether someone could help from the images hereunder ?
Thanks anyway . Bonjour,

Hi,

I collected this fungus on bark of living Pinus sylvestris – ascospores measure about 25–27 x 10.5–11 µm and become 3-septate when overmature. Most other characters should be shown on the photos but if not I will check the material again, of course. I'd appreciate any ideas!

Best wishes,
Gernot

Hi, here I have another indetermined pyrenomycet. The substrate is a branch most likely of Crataegus and there were only few ascomata on it. They didn't have compressed necks but because of the microscopical characters I still think it's a Lophiostoma, maybe a species next to L. quadrinucleatum/triseptatum? The quite tiny spores (11,5-15 x 5-6,5 µm) with constantly three septa are remarkable. The asci are 8-spored and bitunicate, paraphysoids are present. The ascomata are smooth and immersed. By the way, is there any good paper about Lophiostoma(taceae) besides Barr's "Notes on Lophiostomataceae"? Best wishes, Gernot ascomata:

Good evening,
I'd like to ask for your help with this Otidea:

Found a few meters from Otidea concinna, on argillaceous ground, only deciduous trees around, 250 m.
Apothecia cupulate with a split, about 4 cm wide, hymenium lively ochre-yellow, receptacle more dull ochre. When fresh, it had a sweet (almond-like) smell. When drying, a purplish hue appeared on the receptacular surface for some time.

Spores ellipsoid, sometimes a bit inequilateral, 9,3-10,5 (11) × 5,3-5,8 um, Q = 1,7-1,9, with two LBs (sporeprint in water).
Paraphyses up to 4 um wide, bent to curved, usually equally wide all along, some a bit enlargened (up to 6 um) and with shallow notch(es).

Excipulum with yellow-brown exsudate. In MLZ discolors to reddish-brown, doesn't dissolve, no amber drops nor red particles observed. In KOH turns lemon yellow and dissolves into the medium - this is easily seen even with naked eye, like Mollisia rosae.
Mycelium very light brown in exsiccate, hyphae brownish with abundant yellow-brown exsudate. In MLZ stains more golden-brown to reddish-brown without dissolving. KOH reaction same as with excipulum, bright lemon yellow.

Unfortunately there's no photo in fresh state, the one here is already drying and a bit darker. The closest match I found was O. flavidobrunneola, but the apothecium colors are perhaps to dark for that species. Is there any other possibility?
Thank you in advance.
Viktorie

Material from Malta. The immature ascocarps consist of subspherical bodies with a dull olive green velvety indumentum maturing into a dark grey, nebular (cloud-) shaped fruiting body, about 3mm across. It is actually a cluster of perithecia with distinct black ostioles. My attempts to extract or see the asci from the chambers failed, but maybe from this data, the family or genus of the species can be suggested while I try to examine more material.

However the spores are quite abundant, black 17-20um long with an interesting sinusoidal or curved germinal slit running diagonally along its length. This expands in 4% KOH and sometimes the perispore becomes lose and peels away.

Somewhat it reminds me to Hypoxylon.

Studying three ascomata from a suspected Mollisia sp., I found that two had a mixture of 'normal' and very swollen, opaque asci. It is difficult to speculate on the cause without more context, and I would appreciate any suggestions.

It may be a relatively simple answer like over-maturation, but the appearance is quite different to the other asci (even ones that look vital and turgid to me) and those in the few ascomata of other species I have studied previously.

The first ascoma examined was stored for several days prior (in a damp container), but the following two were collected later and examined within hours of collection. Except the missing swollen asci in the second ascomata examined, the characters are similar in the three ascomata, and my current working assumption would be that all are from the same species.

Inflated asci:
• Contents - a large, relatively opaque group of jumbled circular-looking contents, difficult to interpret these inner contents with any confidence (possibly spores and LBs), some with large LBs around base, sometimes opaque contents fills ascus or transparent areas at the base or apex.
• Shape - more broadly cylindrical to ellipsoid, and some look less turgid with the contents at the bottom giving an asymmetric lageniform (bottle-shaped) appearance (particularly in the stored ascomata).
• Apex – seems like 'normal', but the contrast causes a more or less pronounced mammiform appearance, also seems harder to see the IKI bb reaction.
• Base – again like 'normal', both with croziers.

Hello everybody,

Any help on this one is welcome:
Habitat: On the poroid hymenium of decaying Trametes versicolor.

Macroscopic description:
Apothecia up to 0.3 mm in diameter, especially in the centre with a grey colour (from the coloured Excipulum), waxy. Margin whitish, translucent, smooth. Apothecia very crowded, in parts seemingly forming a confluent layer.

Microscopic description: Asci 48-65 x 5-6 µm, often somewhat stalked, pleurorhynch, IKI negative. Paraphyses filiform, diameter about 2 µm. Excipulum consisting of textura globosa to textura angularis, cells grey-brown with sometimes thickened walls. Spores hyaline, with a big variety in size and shape. Hello, in the last few days I have found some Melanomma (I think they are species of Melanomma), but there is one problem : The difference in spore sizes and perithecia features let me think about different species, perhaps different from the common M. pulvis-pyrius. I checked literature but it did not help anyway, i just found some photos of a "M. seminudum" on Zotto's DVD but there are no information about spore size or something. Well here are the descriptions of the perhaps two different species, just to show you and perhaps you can tell me something about it ;) Melanomma No 1 found on decorticated Crataegus-twigs, perithecia not embedded. Spores 18-21x7-8,5 µm. Asci 130-160x10-12 µm. I had not seen any hyphal structures on the outer surface of the perithecia. Melanomma No 2 found on dead, but hanging, corticated Prunus-spinosa-twig, perithecia nearly completely embedded and sometimes (ever?) with a long neck. On the photo you'll see that the perithecia are sometimes clustered in a stroma or whatever. Spores 14-19x5-7µm, thick-walled. Asci 50-80x8-10µm, biseriate and bitunicate. Outer surface with long hyphal structures (?). I just mentioned the differences now, you see the different sizes in spores and asci and especially the perithecia of No 2, which seem to be embedded (unusual for Melanomma-species except M. fuscidulum??). Well, perhaps someone can give some hints for further literature or how to determine these species ;) regards, Kazuya No 1

Michel hairaud.

Hello Everyone,

I have found what appears to be an effuse layer of fruit bodies expanding across the bark of a dead trunk of Corylus avellana about 50 cm above ground level. Macroscopically, they look like tiny spheres tightly clustered together.

Microscopy shows what would appear to be septate hyphae / conidiophores with branches, on which initially hyaline spheres form. As they mature, these clusters of spheres become brown and most seem to contain a refractive guttule. Each tiny sphere is smooth and about 5 um in diameter and most do not separate when prepared for microscopy.

I wonder if this effuse layer could be a hyphomycete, but I can not find any species with clusters of smooth conidia resembling these.

I have attached photos of the effuse layer and the available microscopic chararacteristics.

I wonder if anyone has any ideas about what this might be?

Thank You,
With Best Wishes,
Peter.

Hello everyone
You might be interested in this species; it was originally described by Rodway from Tasmania in 1925 but appears to have turned up recently in southern England. Quite an extreme disjunct distribution! The British collections were identified by Brian Spooner. The problem is that it doesn't fit in Mollisia, even in its traditional exceptionally broad sense, but we can't find a suitable home for it. Does anyone have any suggestions, and has anyone happened to collect it elsewhere in Europe?
A description and a couple of images are given below; there is more information and pictures at http://fungi.myspecies.info/all-fungi/mollisia-subglobosa. Click on the Descriptions and Media tabs on that page to see more.
All help will be gratefully received

Paul

Ascomata apothecia, formed singly or in compact clusters of up to 10-12, rather irregular in form but initially circular and discoid, the margins becoming convoluted especially in clustered ascomata, not gelatinized. Disc grey-green, the margin and underside initially pale, the undersurface becoming mid brown with age. Outer wall (ectal excipulum) composed of irregular dark brown angular cells 7-13 µm diam., with an outer layer of hyaline to pale brown cylindrical to clavate cells measuring 8-11 x 3-4 µm. Subhymenial layer composed of poorly defined hyaline hyphal tissue. Interascal tissue of copious unbranched thin-walled paraphyses ca 2 µm diam., sometimes slightly inflated with narrowly clavate tips. Asci 72-87 x 4-5.5 µm, narrowly clavate with a long tapering stalk, the base sometimes forked indicating the presence of croziers, uniformly thin-walled, the apex obtuse to rounded, with an apical ring 2-3 µm diam. and ca 1 µm thick that stains blue in Lugol's iodine, the ascus contents dextrinoid in Melzer's reagent, 8-spored. Ascospores arranged uniseriately, 4.5-5.5 (-6) x 3-3.5 (-4) µm, ellipsoidal or rarely fusiform-ellipsoidal, aseptate, hyaline or very pale yellow in mass, fairly thin-walled, strongly reticulate, the network 0.75-1 µm diam., without a gelatinous sheath or appendages.

Bonjour à tous,

Voici ce que je pense être un Mollisia mais sans certitude, avec un hyménium d'un beau bleuté et les flancs de l'apothécie noirâtres;

Bernard

These orange "jelly"-like apothecia grow at the apex of the moss Ulota crispa. Spores measure 60-70 x 11 microns. Multiseptate. Multiguttulate. Any suggestion?

Hola amigos:
