Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
Hans-Otto Baral, 22-06-2010 17:20
Hans-Otto BaralHi

Here is a (cf.) Leptosphaeria on Impatiens noli-tangere stems from N-Germany (Mecklenburg). Torsten Richter made the drawing and I the photos.

We have no idea but did not go deep in the literature.

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
The inflation of the apical spore cell is an exception.

The perithecia are distinctly flattened.

Hi Zotto,
Are you really sure about the host ?

Hi Zotto,

Warum soll es nicht L. ogilviensis HB 1423 (noch etwas unreif) sein? Betriebsblind (Lach)

Gruß Peter

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
haha, gute Idee, aber die Perithezien sind dort zu konisch, nicht abgeflacht. Und die großen Öltropfen fehlen hier auf Impatiens.

Alain: The substrate Impatiens noli-tangere is absolutely sure, I asked the finder and he says there is no doubt at all.

I was also looking around L. ogilviensis in seeing L. erigerontis. Ascospores are better than ogilviensis' ones. It has been seen on Aster, Erigeron, Eupatorium....

Oh, thanks, Alain! Is there any illustration of that species?

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
Hi Zotto and Alain,

Berlese (Icones I, pl. LXXI, 3, descr. p.81) shows L.er. as immerse in host tissue and erumpent through the epidermis, not sessile. Is this a less important feature?

ignorant regards,

Martin

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
Hi Martin,
I don't know really. But with the example of L. acuta, this one starts immersed and generally we discover it without the periderm of Urtica whichone disappear quickly. Perhaps it's possible.

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
Question in the round:

Is there a fundamental work on Leptosphaeria? The index lists over 1,600 names, and will remain after deduction of the synonyms Maybe left over 1000 names. In the wonderful book by Berlese (for me a unique work of Pyrenomycetes) many species are so close together that I can not believe that there really so many species exist.

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
many thanks!

The perithecia look superficial but there are a few which seem to bhe young ones, and these are clearly erumpent. Whether the epidermis is gone I am not sure.

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
Hello,

the only fundamental work which I have, is the dissertation of Müller from 1950. I attach it for those who are interested.

Hermine, who also finds Leptosphaeria constantly and puts them aside most of the time, because the day has only 24 hours :-(

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
Leptosphaeria erigerontis in Berlese is not the same that in Holm & Holm (problem with the septs).
Zotto's leptosphaeria is closed to this last one (in ogiilviensis' group)
Holm & Holm "Pleosporacées et Lophiostomatacées" is also a good work (in french).

Re:Leptosphaeria on Impatiens
Salut Jean-Pierre,
Alain

There is a more recent publication: Canadian and some extralimital Leptosphaeria species. RA Shoemaker Canadian Journal of Botany 62:1212, 2688-2729, 1984
