Discos on Betula bark
Marja Pennanen, 02-11-2010 10:23
Hello dear friends,

I found these tiny discos on the Betula pendula, that's fallen down on my own yard a couple of years ago. I've kept it untouched to study, what comes up and much do ;)
These grow on the bark and are up to 0,5 mm wide:

Re:Discos on Betula bark
I've now got only the Old Russian without a micrometer, but myxomycetes spores give some estimates.

The spores are about 8-14x2-3 in size. They can contain some big, but faint droblets and some are with one septum.

The asci are about 50-70x6-8, propably IKI- and few paraphyses about 2 micrometers wide.

Sorry about the photo quality:Marja

Hi Marja

I can't tell. Depends upon the excipulum, could you photograph it in a squash mount?

Dear Otto,

Maybe I could, but would it help concidering the poor quality...

o.k., thanks, hyaline and small celled angularis. A Hyaloscyphacee perhaps. I thought about a Calycellina from spore shape. Are there living paraphyses, and do they contain VBs?

I fera this is quite a puzzle. Something around Parorbiliposis perhaps-.

Re:Discos on Betula bark
Ooh, yes, there were some VB:s and the paraphyses were a little bit longer than the asci.

I'm not very happy to present this photo ;)

But it helps at least that I believe in their presence. Uff.. Anyhow, no idea.
Calyellina in a wide sense could still be possible.

Re:Discos on Betula bark
Thank you, anyway you tried :)

I'm somehow used to not getting all of these my treasures determined :(

And now the stupid question ;) What are the other genuses, that a wide sence of Calycellina includes?

Re:Discos on Betula bark
Phialina would be one such genus, but that has short or long pointed hairs, and I presume yours doesn't have. Parorbiliopsis I mentioned, but that is a waste basket genus, which I refer from the type to Hyaloscypha, though without hairs. That has no VBs in the paraphyses. I fear you have here something about which nobody knows, not to speak of the literature which is often so bad.

I can only recommennd to collect this again, look for variation, and especially, a careful diagnosis. F.ex., to be sure whether the IKI-reaction is negative.

Re:Discos on Betula bark
Thank you :)

I saw no hairs. I should check this with a better microscope to see the IKI-reaction.
Maybe next autumn or maybe not ;)
