Lophodermium oxycocci
Nina Filippova, 19-02-2013 16:22
It was picked from leaves of Oxycoccus palustris and O. microcarpus, in bogs.

Hysterothecia ellipsoid (expanding when overmature to circular), up to 0,7 mm at long axis, first concave with longitudinal slit, then flat-cylindrical to trapeziform (hymenium became concave and hangs over the margin; flanks blackish, edge when mature with pale rim, hymenium translucently-grayish.

Hysterothecium flanks from outer layer of host epidermis (translucent polygonal cells) and inner layer (fungus excipulum) from about textura epidermoidea to amorphous brown cells, edge with palisade layer of ventricose cells 15-20 mk long, about 2,5 mk at base, base of receptacle from brown prismatic cells, radially arranged; asci clavate, with not pronounced clamp, inamyloid, 69-83 x 5-6,2; paraphyses clavate (near 2 mk at base and enlarged in upper part to 4,5), rarely branched, with septa in lower part, exceeding the asci for about 10 mk; spores needle-shaped, some curved in apical region, 27 (25-29) x 0,8 (0,7-1) (N=11).

Re : Lophodermium oxycocci
Dear Nina,

Those are excellent photographs of nearly perfect apothecia.  Congratulations!

There are very few records of Lophodermium species on Vaccinium in Canada and I would love to find this fungus.  What time of year did you make that collection and photograph it?

Dave

Re : Lophodermium oxycocci
Hello, Dave.

It was collected at the end of summer (august).  It is quite common, but i noticed only this species on Oxycoccus so far.

Just in case, could it be that you have the related to this topic publication:

Eglitis, M., Gould, C.J., and Johnson, F. 1966. Fungi found on Ericaceae in the Pacific coastal area. Washington State Univ. Agric. Exp. Sta. Bull. 675: 1-21.

Or probably someone may have next two. They may help, because i have more collections of Lophodermium (and other groups) from other bog Ericaceae. But failed in search of them.

Remler, P. 1979. Ascomyceten auf Ericaceen in den Ostalpen. Biblioth. Mycol. 68: 1-321.

ERIKSSON, B., On Ascomycetes on Diapensiales and Ericales in Fennoscandia 1. Discomycetes. Symbolae Botanicae Upsalienses 19(4): 71 pp. (1970).

Thanks.

Re : Lophodermium oxycocci
Dear Nina,

Thank you for the information on your collection and for the references.  I am not close to the library today, but I think we probably have the last two.  I have not seen the paper by Eglitis et al.

In the Atlantic provinces of Canada, where I live, there are records only of Lophodermium exardium (Cooke & Peck) Sacc. ?on Kalmia angustifolia, and L. melaleucum on Rhododendron canadense.  I suspect there are more species, but probably no one has looked for them.  It is time to start searching!

Dave
