Cyprus Peziza (perhaps)
Caroline Hobart, 24-02-2013 11:53
Hi all,

First post so hope all loads Ok apologies if it doesn't.

Habitat,The collection was found on a bare calc. path in Cyprus 10/2/2013 hills behind Paphos. Several growing together.

Macro description:
A flat disk approx.  7mm max  width, appearing black, but now rehydrated under the stereo it is brown. It is not fully mature. It looks superficially like Pachyella violaceonigra pic in ascomyceti d'italia but flatter. Clearly not this sp as spores too big.  Cross section gelatinous below asci therefore not easy to section or see the underlying cells appearing hyaline /isabelline.

Spores smooth thick wall with two oil drops (13) 14 µ  x 7.5 µ. Paraphyses longer than asci with brown granules in water and some curved clavate to 7µ. Asci fully bluing in Melzers, immature asci content brown in melzers.

Marginal hyphae shown alongside asci stained in congo red. Base cells difficult to see as enclosed in small pieces of gravel.

Further details supplied but assumed that this is a common Med. species but it didn't key out in Spooners (UK) key to Peziza.

any help gratefully received many thanks.
