Hi there,I have found this small valsoid pyrenomycete growing on dead attached Carpinus twigs. For me, it is very strange for being a member of Valsa, as there are no visible ostioles embedded in a grey stromatic mass. Perithecia are arranged in circles.
Microscopically it has allantoid, hyaline, one celled spores of 8-10x1,8-2,4µm. Asci with a distinct apical apparature staining faintly red in Congo. The fruitbody reminds me on some Wuestneia findings...
Any ideas?
All the best,
björn

                Hi Björn
Very strange. Are you sure of Carpinus ?
Any Cystospora on the same twig ?
Alain

                Hi Alain,
I am not that sure about Carpinus, it can also be Fagus. But I did not see any Cytospora on any twig I had collected.
In all Valsa collections I hadn't ever had such small spores (<10µm).
regards,
björn

            Re : Valsa?
Valsa ceratosperma is perhaps possible : ascospores 6.5-10 x 2-2,5 µm. It has been seen on Betula, Quercus, Malus...
But beeks are longer .
