Hyphodiscus on Cupressus leaves
Enrique Rubio, 07-02-2014 21:10
Enrique Rubio

Hi to everybody

Few days ago I have collected several hundreds of these gregarious, white, cup-shaped, downy, shortly stipitate to subturbinate, minute (up to 0.4 mm in diameter) ascomata on very rotten leaves of Cupressus.

The asci, up to 45 x 7 microns, have an apical pore IKI b (sometimes hardly visible) and they have croziers. The paraphyses and the excipular hairs  have conspicuous Vb's that stain cresyl blue. The excipulum is slightly gelatinised. Hairs long cylindrical, hyaline, full lenght incrusted by a granulose matter or simply verrucose (?).

All these characters seem to match with the genus Hyphodiscus, but I don't know some species that fits well with my collection.

Some idea?

Thanks again

Hi ENrique,

How about a Ciliolarina ?
But I would not give a species name ?

Very nice macro and micro pics !

Hi Enrique,
it looks like a species I did collect a few times on Chamaecyparis? sp and Juniperus sp in a tree nursery t I tentatively call Hyphodiscus / Calycina (Pezizella junipericola (Velen.) Svrcek

cheers,
Stip

Re : Hyphodiscus on Cupressus leaves
yes, Stip, undoubtedly the same as you studied. Enrique, you find it in my folder Calycina white (yes!), and I still believe it is closely related to C. gemmarum, both having warted hairs and 4 smaller spores. For the latter Raitviir erected the genus Gemmina. I am not sure whether this is justified, because I think if the hairs were smooth then it would be a typical Calycina. But who knows....
