Hans-Otto BaralHi

This is not a request but an info to all about an interesting determination that I made today.

The fungus presented by Salvador Tello the end of last year
http://www.ascofrance.fr/search_forum/25856
is Pilidium acerinum. No doubt for the anamorph when identifying with Rossman et al. 2004, Myc. Progr., The coelomycetous genera Chaetomella and Pilidium represent a
newly discovered lineage of inoperculate discomycetes.

The apothecia undoubtedly belong to the pycnidia, and they concern the genus Discohainesia. That genus comprised so far only one plurivorous species, D. oenotherae with Pilidium concavum as anamorph, while for P. acerinum no teleomorph was known, until today. :-)

Both species are somewhat pathogenic.

Closely related is Zoellneria with anamorph Chaetomella (on Rosa leaves), which differs from the above mainly in the conspicuous brown setae on both ana- and teleomorph. Interestingly, also Zoellneria has the very same extracellular resinous drops among the apically branched paraphyses.

The two genera are genetically very far from other Helotiales and deserve a family of their own.

Re : Pilidium
Here you have an idea of the two genera:

Chaetomella = Zoellneria on the left with brown setae on apothecia and pale to dark pycnidia

Pilidium = Discohainesia on the right, without such setae on apothecia and dark pycnidia
