Sydowiella fenestrans literature
Chris Johnson, 08-02-2015 14:12
Hello All

I am looking for literature for this species that includes measurements of asci AND paraphyses.

Grateful for any help.

Regards, Chris

Re : Sydowiella fenestrans literature
Hi Chris
I'm a bit confused; in Sydowiella, as in all the members of the Diaporthales, to quote Barr in "The Diaporthales in North America" in Mycologia Memoir 7 (1978) "The centrum of members of the Diaporthales is pseudoparenchymatous in early stages of development; paraphysis-like broad bands of cells may remain in the centrum, but typically no such structures are present in mature perithecia" (my underlining).
Perhaps that is why you have been unable to find a reference to paraphyses?

Below is the relevant page from Margaret Barr's work, which does give details of ascus measurements.

best wishes
Chris

Re : Sydowiella fenestrans literature
Hi Chris & Peter

Many thanks for the helpful literature.

Chris - I found some pseudoparenchyma material in an immature perithecium which I mistakenly thought were pharaphyses. They were diminutive making me doubt my own measurements. It didn't help finding this drawing suggesting paraphyses the same size as the asci. http://mushroomobserver.org/image/show_image/432105?obs=169191

Best wishes,

Chris
