Hyalopeziza on a leaf
Marja Pennanen,

these tiny hairy ones are about 0,1 mm wide.
The spores are about 6-7x2 and asci about 25-30x5-7.
The hairs are glassy, with a lumen and up to 100x3-4 long.
Hyalopeziza pygmaea is similar, but the hairs should be shorter.
Any other ideas?
Marja

This looks much like Hyalopeziza ciliata. What do you think?

H. ciliata is possible. Marja, are the hairs multiseptate?

Re : Hyalopeziza on a leaf
Hi,
thank you for fast answers.
The collection is scanty, all are in the photo. So I'm not going to make extra preparates.
These may be still young, but I saw no septa in my photos and did not notice them while studying.
H. ciliata is a very good candidate.

Re : Hyalopeziza on a leaf
Is your scale 1:1? A problem would then be that I found the hairs of H. ciliata 4.5-6 µm wide at the base. Important would also have been to test KOH for the solubilty of the wall.
So an Urceolella would be possible, such as hirta = salicicola = graddonii, though there the hairs are only 2.5-3 µm wide and flexuous.

difficult to say but at least I cannot see any septa.

Re : Hyalopeziza on a leaf
Hi,
it was raining and I had time to study this using KOH. Nothing happened to the hairs.
Longest was about 110x4.
So, this must be a Hyalopeziza or is there still another genus with hairs like this?

Re : Hyalopeziza on a leaf
This Hyalopeziza collection by Marja arrived here in TUR on Tuesday. There appears to be two kind of marginal hairs, smooth glassy walled "ordinary" aseptate Hyalopeziza hairs and then smaller thin walled hairs with granules on the topmost cell (hair). Sensu Raschle (or Raitviir) we treat this as Hyalopeziza cf. tianschanica. There were only ten apos, we'll try to squeeze a culture out of it.
A lovely collection Marja!

Re : Hyalopeziza on a leaf
Hi Timo
wonderful news! Is there any possibility to identify the host plant? Is the leaf incomplete?
Your two pics are made in Melzer's, isn't it? is there no iodine reaction even after KOH-treatment?
The dimorphism of hairs reminds a bit of a Venturiocistella. It seems that glassy-haired species are not closely related, and it would be interesting to see where a sequence of this clusters.

Re : Hyalopeziza on a leaf
That's MLZ allright. Ascus pore is MLZ+, but it's not evident in the pictures. The asci are a bit young. No free spores in the slide Seppo made. Spore lenght (in MLZ) 5-7 um. According to Raschle asci should be round, but maybe it's just because they are young.
It grew on a Betula leaf.

Re : Hyalopeziza on a leaf
Thanks! Not sure what you mean with "round". The ascus apex? Raschle saw a prominent and striking blue apical ring in the obtuse ascus apex. I really wonder that yours looks negative. The yellow colour of the pics indicates that iodine is present. Are these KOH-unpretreated mounts, and maybe the rings are hemiamyloid, showing the blue only after KOH?

Dear Zotto,
You asked about the host. It was a big Betula leaf allmoust filled with Calycellina leucella.
