Hi Alex,

Spores and asci seems to be very similar to those of Melaspileella proximella (Nyl.) Ertz & Diederich (= Banhegyia setispora L. Zeller & Tóth). What about ascomata?

Hi, Eugene

Congratulations on a successful return from Vietnam !

You're absolutely right! I cannot help wondering your erudition.

Pseudothecia surface, black, slightly flattened, with soft walls, about 200 microns in diameter. Both macro- and microstructures are consistent to Melaspileella proximella. However, I did not see the setae on the ascospores.

Given the rarity of this species, I think it would be right to send a duplicate of sample to Damien Ertz and Paul Diederich.

Friendly,
Alex

Setae are absent on overmature brownish spores and often difficult to find in herbarium material after a few years since collecting.
