This bright orange asco was on some rotting cardboard around a compost bin. The spores are not mature yet so the size of the very few I could find are 13.5 x 7.5 but that could change if I can get them to maturity.
Is there enough information to give a (tentative) id.

an idea would be, perhaps, Nectriella funicola (Berk. & Broome) Petch. I found this species in 1994 on wet cardboard in a rubbish-dump. According to R. Lowen's thesis (1991) Nectria charticola Fuckel and Nectria fibricola Plowright ("S. Yorkshire: near Cadeby, Melton Wood, on old cardboard") are synonyms. The spores, however, are considerably longer than those of your find - 19,7-24,6 x 7,4-10 um in my collection and 16-24 x 4-8 according to Lowen.

I'm certainly not familiar with new taxonomic developments - so much has happened in the Nectria-world in recent times.

One or two are mature now and the spores are a little longer but not enough to suggest the Nectriella. They are also too wide (17 x 11ave)and look to have a granular surface. The paraphyses seem to have the colour in all but the top segment.
Not sure if this brings other groups to the fore.

I think that your fungus is not Hypocreales. It would be useful to know if they are perithecia or apothecia.
Could you show dry material?

Ascospores and paraphyses reminds me to Iodophanus carneus. But maybe I'm wrong. Did you test the reaction of the asci in IKI?

I regard the species also as Iodophanus carneus. A reaction to Melzer is not to be expelled on the photos in my opinion, moreover, the reaction not always is there. The elements of the mushroom are also congophil, what is to be seen on the photos also. Perhaps all that can be judged better if is washed out after the addition of the chemicals with water.

Thanks for your thoughts Uwe and Peter. Iodophanus is not one I had thought of at all and although the apothecia looks to have a more prominent margin it does have some strong similarities microscopically.
