On Metrosideros fallen old leaves
Elsa Sousa, 23-01-2018 23:48
Good evening,
Is it possible any help with this fungus?

Apothecia erumpent from the leaf opening star like. Inner surface white like Propolis. I see some black ascomatas (cleistothecium?) but I'm not sure they are related, since there is no asci on them, but I can upload images later.

Spores filiformes (61.6) 67.2 - 79.8 (80.7) × (3.3) 3.31 - 3.9 (4.2) µm

Me = 71.1 × 3.7 µm

Asci ± 72 x 11.5 paraphyses filiformes

Thank you very much
Regards
Elsa

Re : On Metrosideros fallen old leaves
It could be a Marthamyces, a relative of Propolis, but I never saw a species of that genus. A pity that your photos are unsharp. Is there any reaction with Lugol?

Thanks Zotto, for answering I always admire your generosity :)

I think you're right. The tree is Metrosideros excelsa, it's a NZ originary tree and it's used as ornamental tree on litoral cities here.

Unfortunately my scope magnification is very poor, measuring can have an error specially on width. The fungus is non-amyloid. Spores are 0-1 septate but the septa is not in the middle. Remeasuring more asci it turns to 74.5 × 8.3 µm. The stalk is so short that I don't see it in many asci.

I found this description:

and these keys

What do you think?

Thanks for the article, I did not know. Where did you collect your fungus? I sit a planted tree there?

Indeed I believe it is the right genus and perhaps this M. emarginatus.

Re : On Metrosideros fallen old leaves
I collected the leaves in a small garden with only those trees, in Vila-do-Conde a city on the coast.
