2 weeks ago in New York we saw what appears to be a Volutella growing on prehaps a Gyromitra. I was guessing Volutella ciliata but I am uncertain and do not have literature on this group. The Gyromitra or similar also looked like one that I have not seen before. Any ideas would be appreciated.

Dear John,
Some years ago I found Volutella ciliata on old specimens of Peziza badia, so old mushrooms can be a substrate for this species.
After the spore ornamentation, this Gyromitra looks like G. leucoxantha. There also exists Gyromitra convoluta in North America considered by some authors as a synonym of leucoxantha.
