I would help you irf I could. My key on Ascocoryne is incomplete, no idea why I did not illustrate A. solitaria there. And an intermediate species is also not included.

Dop you have a special collection?

This must have globose phialides with crystals inside, looking like a phragmobasidium.

The left is Ascocoryne solitaria, now called A. albida after the anamorph. The right might be the same, but this must be clarified from the conidiophore shape.

I've been looking at this species recently - there are images here - http://fungi.myspecies.info/taxonomy/term/5008/media and a description here - http://fungi.myspecies.info/taxonomy/term/5008/descriptions

It has really strange inflated conidiophore branches. Goodness knows where the species really belongs...

glad to hear from you and thanks for your link.

The relationship is clarified, sequences from  apothecia fall in the Ascocoryne clade and a sequence of the conidiomata by Stip Helleman concur with them.

The intermendiate species that I was talking about has conidiophores between A. albida and A. sarcoides in shape, but contains the very same crystals as A. albida. (These crystals are not seen in your photos because you figured dead cells). Here a photo by Enrique Rubio:

Those are quite impressive crystals - I was sent the material I illustrated dried but will look for fresh samples. Has the "intermediate" species been sequenced?

No it hasn't so far as I know, but there is a culture by Adam Polhorský so this will be soon sequenced.

This is the only knomn species of Ascocoryne that lacks croziers, and it was an angio- and gymnosperms. The anamorph looks like this:

OK, thank you. The collection I looked at had both types of conidiophore branches (swollen and non-swollen) in the same conidioma, so maybe there is a gradation.

Zotto I think I've some Ascocoryne sequences I haven't shared and some important ones are still waiting to be done...everything is delayed:(.

Yes, there are several degrees of this variation.
A. albida with globose/subglobose cells and rectangular crystals.
A. aff. albida with elipsoid cells and +/- square crystals.
A. aff. cylichnium/A.deuncinata with with cylindrical cells and crystals.
Maybe the crystal shape is important, its hard to imagine, but who knows...


This year I collected almost nothing, but with each new sample I get little bit more confused:)). Annoying is that presumably unrelated morphs can grow together.
I had A.albida anamorph with A.deuncinata teleomorph and also A.deuncinata anamorph with A.albida teleomorph...we will not make sense of this without sequences.
