Phragmotrichum chailletii
William de Jong, 16-01-2022 15:10
Hi everyone,

Found on a cone of Picea abies by Frans Ozinga in The Netherlands: see pictures.
Tiny black perithecia with yellow/brown conidia with longitudinal as well as transverse septa. Measurements: (29,0-)31,0-40,9(-42,0) x (19,0-)19,5x26,2(-26,4) µm; avg. 36,1 x 22,4 µm (n=18).

I'm pretty sure it's Phragmotrichum chailletii. Based on Kunze & J.C. Schmidt (1823), Mykologische Hefte 2: 84-87 and B.C. Sutton & D.K Sandhu, Phragmotrichum pini (W.B. Cooke) comb.nov. (1969), Transactions Britisch Mycololgical Society 42 (1), 67-71.
The conidia are versicoloured, 6-beaked, are frequently chained to each other in pairs of 3 or 4. although, my measurements are a bit longer and broader than in Sutton & Sandhu (24-35x14,5-20 µm).

Since this would be a new species for The Netherlands a confirmation of the identification would be great. Please let me know.

Best regards,
William

Re : Phragmotrichum chailletii
Hi William,

I agree that this is Phragmotrichum chailletii. I am a bit suprised that this has not yet been found in the Netherlands. Here in Germany, it tends to be rather common.

Hi Björn,

Thank you for your reply and confirmation!

It could very well be that this species has been found before in The Netherlands, but apparently it is never documented officially.

Best regards,
William

Re : Phragmotrichum chailletii
Is there also more recent literature about this species?
Edit: Yes there is :) https://doi.org/10.3114/fuse.2020.05.04
(with the following measurement of the conidia: (25–)35–45(–50) × (18–)20–23(–25) µm)
