Scopinella sp. from the Vinis vinifera branch
Perz Piotr,

While looking for Discomycetes on Vinis vinifiera branch I was found a species from the genus Scopinella.
Asci: 2-spored ? IKI-
Spores: brown, 7,1 – 9,0µm x 6,9 x 8,1µm, delicately warted
Full: prithecjum + neck + hairs = cca. 800µm high
Hais: hyaline, thick walled, multiseptate, with obtuse ends, 100-180µm
Perithecjum wall + neck: dark brown, KOH-
Can you help me to find, witch one of the Scopinella it is?
best wishes
Pimpek

Re:Scopinella sp. from the Vinis vinifera branch
Acording to key from Malloch 1976 (incl. only 4 species) ther is only one with 2-spored Asci. It is S.sphaerophila from stroma of Apiosporina morbosa. This is a sp. similar to S.caulincola, differs in 2-sp. asci and habitat & ecology (restricted?). S.sphaerophila has sp. 7,9-9,1 x 5,1x6,5 also smaller than in my found.
With 2sp. asci, sp. 6,9-8,1um thick, long, hyaline hairs and caulicole habitat seem to be different from both of this sp.

Re:Scopinella sp. from the Vinis vinifera branch
the hairs are ?similar like by S.barbata, but this sp. has also 8sp ascii.
2-spored S.sphaerophila does have differend shape of the ascospores.
A. 8sp. hairs not well developed (?dark)
Scopinella caulincola (Fuckel) Malloch (1976), [RSD]; Sordariales
A. 8sp. hars totally different
Scopinella musciformis Stchigel, Umana & Guarro (2007); Sordariales
A. 8sp. hairs not well developed (?dark)
Scopinella solani (Zukal) Malloch (1976), [RSD]; Sordariales
A. 8sp. hairs ?similar
Scopinella barbata (Pers.) Lév. (1878), [RSD]; Sordariales
A. 2sp, on the stroma of Apiosporina morbosa, different sp. shape
Scopinella sphaerophila (Peck) Malloch (1976), [RSD]; Sordariales
?
Scopinella gallicola Tsuneda & Y. Hirats. (1981), [RSD]; Sordariales
?
Scopinella pleiospora (J. Schröt.) Sacc. (1891), [RSD]; Sordariales

Re:Scopinella sp. from the Vinis vinifera branch
Hello Pimpek,
I was quite excited to see your report of a species of Scopinella on Vitis. Your photographs are really excellent. I was impressed that all your pictures showed the fungus in a fresh condition. Usually people only see it dried and do not observe the natural appearance of the ascospores. Congratulations!
As far as I know there are only two species of Scopinella having the hyphae of the perithecial neck extended out into a loose basket-like structure. These are S. barbata Lév. and S. musciformis Stchigel et al. (2006). Of course S. barbata has 8-spored asci and grows on oak leaves, so yours does not fit it very well. Scopinella musciformis was isolated from leaves in Costa Rica and has 2- to 4-spored asci. However, the perithecia of S. musciformis have lateral hyphae fused in groups of 15 or more to form conspicuous spine-like structures. I do not believe you have either S. barbata or S. musciformis.
It is possible that you have an undescribed species of Scopinella. To establish that you should try to get it in culture, and have it sequenced as well. If you cannot do this yourself you might ask a mycologist for help. Unfortunately I cannot help as I am now retired and don't have the proper facilities.
Kind regards,
Dave

Re:Scopinella sp. from the Vinis vinifera branch
Scopinella gallicola Tsuneda & Y. Hirats. was found on rust galls on Pinus. It had 2- 4-spored asci and a Harziella anamorph. It seems quite different from yours.
Scopinella pleiospora (J. Schröt.) Sacc. has short-necked perithecia, 16- to 24-spored asci and grows on dung. It is probably not a species of Scopinella.
I was incorrect in my previous note when I said S. musciformis has 2- to 4-spored asci. It really has 8-spored asci.

Re:Scopinella sp. from the Vinis vinifera branch
Dear Dave,
thanks a lot for your reply. I have currently descriptions of all S. species exept Scopinella gallicola [Can. J. Bot. 59(7): 1192–1195 (1981)], also with 2-4sp. asci.

OK, I will try. How long the ascpospores does have ability to germination? This is collection from 2009-05-09.

Re:Scopinella sp. from the Vinis vinifera branch
Hello Pimpek,
The spores may still be viable, although I do not believe they live very long. It's worth a try.
I will send the S. gallicola paper to you by email.
