Minute hyaline ascomycete on beech leaves
Gustaf Fredell, 22-10-2024 00:46
Gustaf FredellHello,
Recently I found these very small ascomycetes (< 1mm) on decaying beech leaves, seemingly emerging from leafspots and they also had a little "hat" of black tissue presumably punched out of the leaf when the hymenium emerged. Some but not all flouresced heavily green under UV. Ascospores hyaline, gluttulated, fusiform, non-septate, (13)14.49(18.12) x (1.92)2.33(2.79) uM, Qe=6.24, n=20.

Given that they seem to be emerging from a leafspot I have checked the telemorphic forms of common beech leafspots, but I have had no luck. I was hoping that someone may be able to shed light on this tiny fungi!

Kind Regards,
Gustaf Fredell

Hello Gustaf,
macroscopical appearance and spores could fit with Calycellina fagina. It would be good to have some more details: excipulum, ascus-porus reaction with IKI, paraphyses, etc., anyway.
Yours, Lothar

Re : Minute hyaline ascomycete on beech leaves
Hi Lothar,
Thank you very much for your reply. After checking it seems to be a good fit. Unfortunately I don't have chemicals, im still quite new to asco ID. Im starting to realise how important to excipulum is, as I had never really bothered to take photos of it until a couple months ago, so im still not in the habit of looking specifically for it! Here is a photo I took of the shield however, of this is at all useful.
Kind Regards
Gustaf Fredell

Yes, it is clearly the shield (scutum) of C. fagina. It should be around 100 µm diam. and the apothecia around 200 µm.
