unknown discomycete from Brooklyn
Ethan Crenson, 29-06-2025 18:11
Hello all,

A friend found this disco yesterday in Brooklyn, NY decorticated hardwood in a wooded park. The largest had a diameter of about 4mm. It showed no response in KOH.

The spores are very small ellipsoid and somewhat acute at the ends with a guttule at each pole. 2.6-2.8 x 1.6-2µm

Asci are faintly IKI+, about 60 x 3.7µm, the spores uniseriate, they appear to have a long tail.

Ectal excipulum is a brown textura angularis, the terminal cells globose about 5.5-6.0µm in diameter.  Medullary excipulum is hyaline and textura intricata.

Paraphyses are cylindrical and appear to have oil content.

Any assistance is greatly appreciated.

Thanks!

Ethan

Re : unknown discomycete from Brooklyn
Hi Ethan

what a surprize! But you are too late, the MS is now in layout and will soon be published :-)

It is a Peltigeromyces and probably our new species from Europe, which is due for publication since many years. But - as often - papers take a huge amount of time.

If you have the possibility, please give it for sequencing. ITS will be enough.

The family is also a new one, Peltigeromycetaceae, related to Ploettnerulaceae.

Re : unknown discomycete from Brooklyn
Hi Zotto, and thank you!

Is this is what is sometimes referred to as Parthenope pilatii? And do I understand that it has an anamorph in the form of yellow cushions? I think that is what I have seen in my collection... I have added a photo

I do not know what the substrate is for this collection, but it is definitely not Alnus. I have added a photo of the wood in cross section which might give some information.  Trees in the area were Quercus, Fagus, Liriodendron, Ulmus, Liquidambar.

Of course I will sequence this collection as soon as I can!
