Ascomycete among bryophytes.
Josep Torres, 29-12-2025 08:30
Josep TorresHello.
A tiny ascomycete sprouting under Juniperus thurifera, on calcareous soil, among the bryophytes.
Orange ascomata, flattened grain-shaped, with a diameter of 0.6–0.8 mm.
Sparse asci, containing more than 100 ascospores, with no apparent reaction to Melzer's reagent. Thread-like paraphyses with yellowish intracellular pigment, not protruding above the level of the asci, with short, broadened septa at their ends.
Cylindrical ascospores with large lipid droplets inside and with the following measurements of free ascospores in water:
(8.6) 8.9 - 12.4 (16.1) × (3.2) 3.5 - 4.2 (4.5) µm
Q = (2.1) 2.3 - 3.3 (3.9) ; N = 34
Me = 10.6 × 3.8 µm ; Qe = 2.8

Despite my best efforts, I haven't been able to find anything similar to my proposal.
Any feedback would be greatly appreciated.
Thank you in advance.
Best regards.

Re : Ascomycete among bryophytes.
Yes it looks like lichen, apparently Biatorella fossarum,

Yes, Josep, Biatorella fossarum, a common lichen often confused with Octospora/Lamprospora.

Re : Ascomycete among bryophytes.
Many thanks to all three of you.
Interestingly, it shared space with some apothecia of Octospora gemmicola, which had a virtually identical macroscopic appearance.
It will therefore remain as Biatorella fossarum.
Best regards.

Re : Ascomycete among bryophytes.
When you cut Biatorella you notice It is much more hard than Octos or Lampros
