tiny gray asco on Pinus strobus / moss
Ethan Crenson, 22-05-2026 20:08
Hello all,

Yesterday in NYC I was visiting an eastern white pine that has the Zythia resinae teleomorph growing on the resin when I noticed these tiny gray cup fungi growing on the bark among moss and/or algae.

The cups are very small, measuring about 0.2mm in diameter. They have a light gray hymenium and darker gray recepticle.

Ectal excipulum is textura globulosa with some textura angularis.

There are clavate marginal hairs (photo)

Asci are clavate, thick walled, IKI-

Spores fusiform, guttulate. I only saw one free spore: 14 x 3µm, in the asci, in Lugol's solution, some of the spores appear 1-septate

Any suggestions as to a genus?  Much appreciated as always!

Ethan

The hairs look warted like in a Hyphodiscus? But the apos are very small.

Hyphodiscus had crossed my mind. But I was not sure if I was seeing any warts on those hairs.

I see warts or at least a rugh surface, but a better idea is perhaps Ciliolarina.
