Once again: White and hairy
Marja Pennanen, 04-07-2010 12:12
Hello,
I've collected too many white hairy ascomycetes now, when they are fruiting. Luckily the weather is now hot and they'll disapear ;)

I found these on a grass leaf, maybe a Carex-species. They are about 0,2 to 0,6 mm wide and substipate or subsessile, I don't know the difference between these terms :(

Re:Once again: White and hairy
The spores are about (8-)10-12x1.5-2 and have some small droplets.
Asci about 32-45x5-6 (IKI+) and paraphyses 4-5 wide, 10-20 exeeding the asci, septate at the base, containing some droplets and lanceolate, but the tips are not sharp.

Re:Once again: White and hairy
The hairs are glued together and maybe 20-40x1.5-2 and doesn't melt in KOH.
Once again I've got no idea even of the genus (Echinula, but I doubt...).

Here the hairs in IKI:

Re:Once again: White and hairy
I am not sure whether the hairs are smooth or granulate.

If smooth it reminds me of a Psilachnum, probably P. acutum. On the DVD are some photos and drawings.

Hello,
I think, that the hairs are smooth, but I couldn't see them well enough as they were in clusters.
I'll check them later, maybe tomorrow at the local university with better equipment.

Psilachnum acutum seems to be a good option.
Once again: thanks :)

Hi Marja,
I think acutum too, from a collection of mine i have noted resineous exudate on the hairs.
cheers Stip

Re:Once again: White and hairy
Hello Stip,
and thank you for further confirmation. This is naturally a new species for me and there seems to be few (1?) collections of it in Finland. This grew "on my own yard", only about 50 meters from my home.

Nice to "hear" of you for a long time :)

Greetings from hot North Carelian: Marja
