Yellow hairy on Betula leaves
Marja Pennanen, 13-09-2010 09:07
Hello,
these are tiny, 0,1-0,2 mm wide.

There was something else on the leaves, too. I don't know what. Maybe I'll come back to it later.

Re:Yellow hairy on Betula leaves
They remind Hamatocanthoscypha straminella, but does it grow on leaves?
I'll check this with a better microscope, but my estimates are spores 6x2 and asci 25x5.
I'm not sure which are hairs, but I suppose these are paraphyses.

Has someone experiences of this kind of species?

Re:Yellow hairy on Betula leaves
Could you supply us with a photo of the hairs? Important also to figure the spores. Are they guttulate? I thought it could be Calycellina araneoconcta, with 4-spored asci and spores about 15 x 3 µ.

Re:Yellow hairy on Betula leaves
Ooh yes,

it was very immature fungi I studied home.
This has peculiar spores about 15-18x2-3. They are narrower at the other end and often bent on the other end, only very few, tiny droplets.
Asci 4-spored, 30-40x5-6.
The hairs reminded Hyaloscypha hairs and were 20-40x2-3 (think I saw one with 2 septas).

I'll attach photos here later at home, weather there is something to show ;)

I've got no papers with me, but once again I feel, that you made a right determination on wrong information :)

Marja.

Yeah, it's clearly araneoconcta. Hiope you find images on the DVD

Re:Yellow hairy on Betula leaves
Hello,

found no information of the species on internet.
Is the species a new one or changed name or something?
Can I find the description in Ains "Revised..."?
I suppose it will be new to Finland, something like 15. for me this year.

Hi Marja,

you did not find anything because of a typo it must read "araneocincta" search for this name on the Zotto's DVD, there is one document. IF considers it to be a synomym of Phialina lachnobrachya which is described on p. 95 of the "Revised".

Cheers

Re:Yellow hairy on Betula leaves
Thanks,

I'll study this more home, but with that synonym there are a couple collections from Finland.
There seems to be P. lachnobrachyoides, too, which is 8-spored.

Re:Yellow hairy on Betula leaves
lachnobrachyoides is different. But lachnobrachya and araneocicnta are very close. The IF takes them as one species, but I had reason to separate them. Always on Betula I see yellow apos and on Acer etc. they are white. The pigment is in the VBs, as seen on your pic. Again a vital character, disappearing in the herbarium with the years. Microscopically the two are actually very much the same, but I wonder a DNA-analysis will bring up differences too.

And Raitviir and Seppo have lachnobrchya in Phialina.
